+92 We read in history books about how you didn't 'date' lots of people you married one person and stayed with them forever, so our future generations read in the history books about all the man-whores and slags and even just general people who dated loads of people before they settled, and even getting married more than once! Amirite?

...Have you never heard of Benjamin Franklin?

No, who was that?

I always think it's funny when people read about others before us being with only one person (where the woman most likely had no say in it) and assume that they were happy and that it was a good thing.

Thank you so much for posting this. Okay, on the surface, high divorce rates seem like a bad thing. But really, the alternative is just being trapped in an unhappy marriage for the rest of your life - which is what USED to happen! Women got NO say except in extraordinary circumstances, and sometimes, the man didn't even get a say and it was arranged by third parties (usually bride's and groom's parents). How is people having more freedom in their marital status ever a bad thing?

Exactly! It's like people just assume things like infidelity, emotional/physical abuse, drug addiction, lack of love, and other things of that nature are all new to marriage. Though I personally do want to get married and be in it for the long haul, I think it's pretty fantastic that the taboo surrounding divorce has been lifted.

But nowadays people arnt forced into marriage as much, therefore they shouldnt rush into marriage like alot of them people probably do.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Our future generations probably won't see that in history books. They'll probably be doing the same things.
