+379 All subjects in school are important! Math can be used for architecture, measurements, and countless other things. Science is important so we know how our world works. History is important so we don't repeat previous mistakes (such as Hitler). Learning symbolism in literature is important for...for, um...uhhhh...okay, you got me, amirite?

Learning grammar rules in English?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, but when you're tested on the symbolism of an event, it won't really apply later...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Literary interpretation; it could easily be applicable in law, business, really anywhere.

Forming flowery sentences to confuse but inform your friends.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The way I bullshit my essays foreshadows how this material will be absolutely useless in the future.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Surprisingly, I haven't had to do much interpretations but yea it sux

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that's not why history is important

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In part it is. George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

by Anonymous 13 years ago

in part. a very small part.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I certainly wouldn't call it small. What would you propose its main purpose is?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i just love history it makes me realize how different things were and in a beautiful way i just feel so connected to myself when i think of it

Learning symbolism helps you interpret books and TV shows and movies so that when you watch them, you're not only entertained, but you also learn from them and therefore enjoy them more.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This seems like something I would write on an essay about this subject. In other words complete and total BS

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You can do that without analyzing literature. I'm absolutely terrible at detecting figurative language and literary elements, but I feel like I understand symbolism in shows and movies perfectly. Don't get me wrong, I love literature; I just think English requires too much analysis and therefore causes students to hate the entire class because of it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

so you get to learn and apply stuff you interpret into life?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank God someone agrees with me that literature is absolute bullshit. I am reading Beloved right now for my English class and I am failing to see the point. One question we had to answer was why dose Morrison give information about Sweet Home little by little? My answer was "Because she wants to fuck over every single high school English student that ever reads the piece of shit that is Beloved."

Vhat do you have against Hitler?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How would you even know if you are pregnant with a Hitler?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Symbolism helps with dream interpretation. Many scientists have hypothesized that dreams include important information that leads to the solutions to our problems and struggles. Bam.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

and yet the past continues to repeat itself (genocides still happen today), and not all math is used for architecture.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You have to admit that without one of my videos, science would of sucked hello

Remember when Bill Nye didn't troll by means of self-reference? I miss THAT Bill Nye.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well I just find it enjoyable.:)

Actually, I think interpreting literature IS important. It is the same as interpreting art. It makes the story easier to relate to and can even teach you important lessons if you can understand the symbolism and themes/subjects within them. I'm so very tempted to go on a tangent here, but I'll refrain. On a last note, since I'm planning on majoring in English when I go to University, I'd dare say it's important to learn.

At least someone understands. Literature can do so much. IMO it can save lives (and I don't mean just he bible and other religious texts). It's generally important in learning to understand people as well. I think literature can be an eye-opener and mind-broadening experience. In short, it irks me that people disregard it because they think it doesn't have real world applications, because it does. Not to mention most forms of entertainment are often based off of literature. =P

Symbolism is important in what the author is trying to say, which we need to be able to interpret in business, law, politics, and any time you want to persuade someone or evaluate someone's attempt to persuade you.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The class also teaches you how to BS your work, so the class if not the subject is very important.

Quoting my senior year english teacher, "you learn the same thing every year it's completely pointless to relearn what you already know."
