Because cars that are entering the road, they can be mucho assholes sometimes. Like where I work, I have to take the highway there and right after I get off, it's really hard to enter the street (even though there are traffic lights) so I would be waiting there for the lights to change and there would be a whole line behind me just waiting to go. Inb4 cool story bro

ok....but last time I checked theres not an accident everyday at the same exact time on the same exact highway. Of course accidents would slow down movement...duh.

Mostly due to the douchebags that wait until the last minute to merge so as to "get further ahead" causing whoever is actually on the highway to slam their brakes and the pattern repeats henceforth.

One person ahead applies their breaks, person behind does this so as not to hit other, this repeats down the line until speeds are lowered to a crawl if not a halt as each car goes slower then the one ahead.
