+141 At most middle school winter concerts there are no songs about religion because not every child believes in God. If that's so, there should be no songs about Santa because not every child believes in Santa, amirite?

But no one gets offended if you sing about Santa

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Anyone who gets offended about anything should shut the fuck up and deal with it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, that makes sense. Instead of trying to create change and make things better, we should all just shut up and deal with shit even though it's wrong.

I am offended by rape. I should just shut the fuck up though, because rapists are humans too, and therefore have rights, **amirite**?

Being offended by rape and being offended by a song about God are two different things. Oversensitive, amirite? If we were singing a song about a rain God from the Amazon (which I have sung in choir and don't believe in) I just deal with it and don't let it bother me

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No one is expected to believe in a rain god. If there's an atheist at these sorts of things they are often looked upon with discomfort and uneasiness.

the way i see it, by ignoring that certain (very prominent) beliefs about God exist, especially during the holiday season, schools are siding exclusively with the atheists. I think that there can be songs about religious traditions, songs that have no religious connotations, and that everyone should just be able to accept whatever other people's traditions are and let them be recognized

How do schools side with atheists? An easy solution would be to mention all commonly-practiced religions so no one feels left out.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

exactly, such as I was suggesting. Instead of being afraid to mention God, schools should properly represent the different students' views of God in their concerts, especially dominant beliefs such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But that's hardly the case. Most people are all "lol Jesus," or just mention one god/religion throughout the entire damn concert. Giving world religions in general a chance would be great, and I doubt any rational atheist would be offended by that. It's just the idea of pushing a specific religion on others that irks me, and evidently, many others.

At my jr high like half the freaking songs were about baby jesus. ono

by Anonymous 13 years ago

all of mine are about jesus

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So are mine. My director has gotten quite a few complaints.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't like singing jesus songs. they're so boring.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

We had a ton of Jesus songs too. They weren't even good ones.

Santa and religion are two different things.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Except I don't hear about people going "believe in Santa or burn in hell" or making discrimatory laws based upon their belief in Santa...besides everybody knows Santa isn't real, there's not enough people willing to accept that about God.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

...Santa's not real?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Who's the asshole who downvoted everything? I can't tell cause I'm on my phone, but seriously talk about getting butt hurt.

it was me

Yea, we had one Jewish song a year. One year, my little brothers class even had a "Hanakuh Party" where they were to eat potato pancakes and learn how to play dreidel. My mom was very offended that they allowed this but not a song about a Christian holiday in the winter concert and too my brother out of school early that day.

For me, winter concerts stop after the 3rd grade, unless you're in the school choir, but you have to be in grade 5 or 6 to be in that. Once you're in middle school, there's no more winter concerts ever. xD

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's the first concert for us in middle school for people in band...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The band at my school doesn't have concerts. They play for school events, that's it. Like, Remembrance Day ceremonies and such.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In elementary school we sang Christmas and Hanukkah songs. Even though I'm not Jewish I really didn't care, it's a song. Get over it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The school I went to for some reason only let's the band play one Hanukkah song throughout the entire band[the 8th graders got to play it] and all the others were Christmas and winter.

When I was in choir a few years ago, my Muslim friends took no offense the song about Mary and Joseph. People need to stop getting so butthurt over little things. It's a song; no one is trying to convert you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's not logical, they're two totally different things. One of them is just a made up person that doesn't actually exist, and the other one's Santa.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

God's not technically a person...
