Although I tend to disagree with you, you are completely correct in this. Knowing how to tie a tie (which is very fun to say) separates the boys from the men (among other factors of course).

It started out a long time ago to keep gentleman's necks warm and wrapped up. With so many people living in a small place, disease spread like wild fire. So the wealthy would be able to afford this little extra piece of clothing that would help and keep them from getting sick. But with time, better sanitation, and more suburban settlement, the tie is virtually useless. Nonetheless, I still have to agree with this comment.
