+246 It makes no sense that "dress" and "perfume" are masculine in Spanish, amirite?

The gender of a word doesn't have anything to do with the actually meaning of the word, at least in Latin it doesn't.

Ha, yeah. Considering that the word for manliness, 'virtus', is feminine.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I know!! i was trying to think of that word but i wouldn't come to mind. You speak latin/are learning latin?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Mhmm. I just finished my second year with the language.

Although it has nothing to do with the meaning of the word, interestingly enough I found, grammatical gender can affect the speaker psychologically. For example, in Spanish, the word for bridge is masculine. In German, it's feminine. Experiments show Germans instinctively assign feminine qualities to them; case in point, show a German speaker a picture of a bridge and they're more likely to describe it as "elegant" or "slender." The Spanish lean more toward "strong" and the like. Very cool.

Tampon in french is masculine... wtf! Who came up with these?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It tripped me out when I was learning, I wanted to say 'una vestida' not 'un vestido'. Then I realized Spanish was fucking confusing and learned German.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Isn't german even more confusing?! They talk as if they are spitting and are destroying their throats (no offfence)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

One might say so, but I can't roll my r's, therefore making spanish FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE.
