+838 You don't know why people complain about reading. If you find the right story to read, it can be really fun. It's like watching a movie in your head, except that you can make the characters and setting look however you want it to. (Unless they come out with a movie of it.), amirite?

Nobody complain about reading. Some poeple like it some people not, just like every other thing that ever existed.

You obviously don't do much reading judging by your grammar. I read this and cringed.

Maybe English isn't their first language. Not everyone here is from mainly English speaking countries. Sorry, just the way they worded it sounds like they have their grammar mixed up because they're confused, not because they're lazy.

I enjoy reading for entertainment. I hate it when I have to analyze it for English class. Meaning behind literature is completely objective, there is no one answer, and when your teacher disagrees with you, your grade suffers, regardless of how you back it up. That is not right. In math, there is most often one answer, and if you don't have that answer, you're wrong. It doesn't depend on if the teacher likes you or your views or not.

Really? At my school, all opinions are right, you just have to have some points to back it up and proof from the text...and then you gotta make a connection, and yadda yadda yadda. I hate it though when they make us read 2 page stories like "Jimmy's Lucky Hit" or "The Parrot at the Candy Shop". Independent reading is always the best part.

Well, yes there is that. But on multiple choice tests with questions like "what does the author mean here?" or "What best fits the mood of (character) in this selection?" Yes, sometimes those are obvious, but there are times when they aren't, and you're downgraded for your opinion.

That's true. My English teacher is actually pretty flexible and we usually have a class debate about it, or he might say that the two most obvious answers are both right. Usually our multiple choice is, "Why are brackets used in paragraph 6?" or, "Why is there quotation marks around "Hey, what's up?"" or something like that.

I've gotten people tell me "Oh, I hate reading" and it kinda makes me want to punch them. Just like the same people that say "I hate school"

No one ever truly hates reading. They hate reading certain books, in fact they could hate reading the majority of books, but there's at least one book out there that they have to like. I think one reason people hate reading is because of how English class makes us rip books apart until we detest the book even if it is a really good story.

I don't actually see the characters, so it doesn't work like that for me.

And it lasts for like a week
