Except it's not And those "combinations" you're thinking about are called contractions

But "not" is oftentimes used in contractions... don't, won't, shouldn't, can't...

Doesn't mean it always is. The English language is complex, but I believe grammatical changes should come naturally and not be forced. That makes them awkward. Also, those are "do not" "will not" "should not" and "cannot". Never is "not ever". There's a different order so it may not apply the same rules.
