Lots of space, high population, high crime rates in the right areas to take the blame for deaths, plenty of crazy people so no one will believe them, and we're ethnically diverse so they have a lot of options.

Pretty recently, the USAF brought back the SR-71 Blackbird into service again after a few decades of dormancy (inb4 HURDURRR u got that from black ops lololol). I guess it can be mistaken for a UFO, since it is the fastest plane in the world and is slender in design. Anyway, right after it was reactivated, UFO sightings increased in the US. Although this doesn't answer the question, it's related and I thought it was interesting.
