+350 In books, characters normally say "Err" instead of "Umm" or "Uhh", but in real life no one ever stutters like that, amirite?

I've always wondered about that in Harry Potter, because I've never seen it anywhere else. Is it just a British thing, or just a book thing?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

neither. im american and i do it

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i do it hard

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you say "er" in a British accent, it sounds like "um" in an American one :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I say "Uh" and "Um" but not "Er"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I say "erm", so I'm undecided as to NW or YYA.

How is that a stutter?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But french toast really is good for your soul, right?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I say er and hmmm, and I only say um when I'm thinking really hard. :) But Americans (or at least Californians), say "like" just about every other word -_-

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm from California and I only say "like" unnecessarily when I'm explaining things. And no one from California (at least in my part) actually calls it Cali. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm, like, not, like, trying to, like offend anyone. I'm from SoCal and a lot of my friends talk like that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, actually, I didn't think before I typed. I do hear people talk like that (more in SoCal than NorCal) but not so much in high school.

Apparently you've yet to watch people speak in public, I've a habit of counting "umms, errs, and uhhs" when listening to people speak and it happens quite a lot - it becomes quite irksome. Know the topic on which you are speaking and speak with confidence and security else it is hard to take you seriously.
