+188 "oh my god" is just an expression and you can use it no matter your religious beliefs, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

that's like saying God is just an expression. Sorry, I'm against that

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, that's two different things.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you can throw around God's name while laughing at a Family Guy clip, it seems to really devalue who He is

by Anonymous 13 years ago

devaluing God doesn't mean anything to people who aren't religious. I also think that its such a common expression its not really devaluing him. "Oh my God" is used to worship God in churches and such anyway. & where did family guy come from?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The expression isn't devaluating "God" me personally I'm atheist but it's an expression that just uses a word that is religious and when most people say it they mean "What the hell" or something like "oh wow" it really has nothing to do with God.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I know but I'm just saying if he really wanted to get technical about it, the people in a church say it to worship him. I am a christian but I see nothing wrong with "oh my god" like you said it just means like "oh wow".

by Anonymous 13 years ago

OP said "regardless of your religious beliefs". So I am religious, and it matters to me. There's also a thing called context. Saying "Oh my God" in a worship setting is totally different than saying it to mean "Oh wow".

by Anonymous 13 years ago

True but I don't see how say oh my god in a oh wow sense is devaluing God.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Christians believe that God's name is holy and to invoke it in any context outsde of worship is disrespectful because it is not our place as His creation to call upon Him to do our bidding. Saying oh my God is calling on Him to be a divine witness To our own action, which is basically us telling Him what to do.

It says in the bible its against Him to use his name in vain. Saying oh my god other than while in prayer is using his name in vain and it is a SIN.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't care what the bible says, what I'm trying to say is when they aren't thinking of god when they say they just use it as an exclamation

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's what IN VAIN means. If you say His name and you are not thinking of Him, or saying it in a way for Him then it's in vain and it's a sin. If you're not Christian then it doesn't matter but if you are then it does. It's one of the 10 commandments so obviously it's a pretty important part of following the Bible. And it's complete blashphemy ti say you don't care about the Bible, I reappy hope you aren't Christian, because if you are you are a poor example and you need to spend more time in church.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Nevermind I see you are an atheist that's probably why you don't understand. Christians who really believe in God know that He is good and that we are not to use his name for anything other than religious purposes, God is not entertainment for us, He is so much more. Plus it's a sin, I'm not going to ask for forgiveness 1200x a day because I have no self control to stop using his name in vain.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Even though it's just an expression, it is still considered a minor sin. I'm not saying I'm not guilty for it, I say it a bunch, but to some religious beliefs it is not "just an expression".

*religions

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's just like "goodbye", which used to mean "god be with you" but got changed into an expression of polite dismissal.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This guy seems to have no problem with that. http://youtu.be/9-2JI9QraEU

by Anonymous 11 years ago

YES OH MY GOD! DZZZZZZZZZH (ah) WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB. . . sorry for the generic Skrillex reference

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Technically, Christians can't or shouldn't use it...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Am I the only one who finds it a bit comically ironic when atheist say it? I mean just think about it before you jump on my case.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What about 'oh no god!' for athiests

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh my Richard Dawkins.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My friend says "oh your god" I think I'll start using it

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You can't have a monopoly on spoken language, preventing someone from saying something just because you don't like it is ridiculous.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Lol all these Christians getting angry. That's a sin right?
