+398 Don’t lament that there are no good books, or movies, or music. Write them, make them, or compose them. If you want something to exist that currently doesn’t, make it yourself, amirite?

Even a child would notice when there isn't good food for a long while, and all he could do would ask adults capable of cooking to make it. You don't need to be able to do something to want it done.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That is true. But you're comparing something that is a basic human need (food) with things that are only wants (entertainment).

No I'm not, I specifically said "good food". I could've just as well said toys or anything else of the sort. In this post's case, the average person is complaining about the lack of talented people making good entertainment, he can't do anything about it by himself being one of the untalented folk, can he?

Ah, apologies, I didn't read it properly. I suppose then if you were unable to produce something, as many people do not have the ability, nor time, to write or compose music, then it would come under, do not complain about a problem (ie, lack of decent entertainment) without offering a solution Although there is the point that everyone should be allowed to critique something - it is a musicians job to make music, and if he intends on selling it, he must be open to the fact it's going to be reviewed, by people who do not have the job to make music.

Well yes, maybe he ought not complain at all if he can't make it, but the post says "If you want something to exist that currently doesn’t, make it yourself" and it is all I'm arguing against.

Yeah, and while your argument is perfectly valid - that not everyone has the ability to make something, but they do have the ability to obtain it from others, I still stand by my claim that, at least with superficial entertainment purposes (that is, not for systems of government or anything) if you find yourself displeased by all the books, movies and music available, it would be better to create something that you consider worthwhile for a person to spend their time on. Also, I know it's very different, but this had a similar concept: http://www.cracked.com/article_16239_5-psychological-experiments-that-prove-humanity-doomed.html Number 3, Bystander Apathy Experiment (1968) That is, people are more reluctant to aid another if there is more people around - because they just think "someone else will do it".

Hmm, that might be a good point, although it doesn't quite relate, being "eh, it's easy but I don't really wanna do it; I'll just wait for someone else" and the post's problem being "man, I can't myself do it at all, and the others who can are being lazy". And I still disagree, if just anyone was able to create art and entertainment seen nowadays, the world would have about 90% more art. It's only entertaining being so rare. It's like students complaining about the education system failing: what can they do? They're just the users, the audience. They've no power. If, however, a genius was among the student body, he'd have no right to complain and would have to help the education as much as he could using his gift. What I'm saying is, this post should only be targeted to the talented people out there, not the average user on the site.

i love reading your arguments. you always win.

You don't need to be good at something to entertain yourself with it. I draw all the time, and I'm probably the worst artist on Earth. But it's fun and I like the shit I make, even if everyone else thinks it's garbage.

This is how Queens of the stone age makes music. They write music that they want to hear.
