You have free will. However, some choices are always going to be better than others. You don't ask "What's the point of having free will? If I decide to go smoke crack I might die!"

I believe that even if you don't believe in God, but you're still a good decent person, you won't be 'burning in hell for all of eternity.' I don't think it works like that.

Exactly. Most people who believe in God believe that He is kind and forgiving. I have a hard time believing He would ever punish decent people who don't worship Him in such a way.
