+483 You find it extremely difficult to be in the presence of someone who's smoking without trying to breath through your shirt or something, amirite?

It's not that big of a deal. So many posts mention this, and coughing in the presence of smokers, and holding your breath while walking past... I really doubt 2 seconds of second-hand smoke would hurt you badly. Stop listening to all those stupid ads and after-school specials because they exaggerate greatly. You could also die from water. Does this mean drinking multiple glasses of water a day will kill you? No! Unless you're with the smoker each and every time he smokes, you won't get nearly as much harm in your lungs.

Yes, but water doesn't smell nasty. I wouldn't want to bury my face in my shirt so much because of any possible 'harmful side effetcs', but more because I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke.

Oh then that's quite alright. Though it would be rude, like plugging your nose walking by someone smelly from the gym.. Or like grimacing or shutting your eyes while walking by someone with poor fashion choices or just an ugly-ass face.

Except for the ugly outfit, which isn't a big deal, none of those things are within a persons control, while smoking is 100% in their control. And none of those other things are damaging to another person.

ono Do you misinterpret absolutely everything I say on purpose? This is all I'm trying to prove; smoking ISN'T damaging to another person in 2-3 seconds of walking by a smoker. If, say, a person of a completely different culture walked by, and they smelled of rotten eggs and garbage, you'd also want to cover your nose, but it would be just as rude to do that as it would if if he were just a smoker.

It's bad enough that within a few seconds I get a headache that lasts most of the day. And I know that you meant it'd be rude, but I don't think the two can be compared in that manner, they're too different.

I was yelled at by my parents, who smoke constantly, for doing that.

i'd be all "FUCK YOU MOM!YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO RAPE MY LUNGS!"

I tried that, and it didn't end well. :/

Yeah, but that's mostly because my asthma + allergies combination is awful

Or, you know, you could leave. Even walking 10 feet away makes it fine.
