+276 It makes you really angry to think of families where men are so highly favored over women, that when women come to their family for help in an abusive situation, they are encouraged to stay with their husband and end up dying at the hands of their abuser or living as a victim for their entire lives, amirite?

Or a man in that same situation, which is even worse since not even the police will listen to them because they'll be ridiculed. Women in that situation can at least call the police.

Yes, that's true actually. I really don't understand what is so hard about leaving an abusive relationships though. Just pack up and get the hell out. "Peer Pressure to stay" is a stupid and dangerous excuse used by both genders. Protip: The number of female abusers is rising rapidly, since law enforcement are trying harder not to laugh at abused men.

I think the main reason for just "leaving a relationship" is that if you get caught by your partner, he might just kill you. Literally. So they live in fear, to leave or not to leave.

On a related note, a while back on the news there was a story about an Afghan women who was jailed for adultery after being raped. She only had her sentence reduced after she agreed to marry her rapist. What an incredibly fucked up world this is at times. :(
