+338 If you're from America you're American. Just because your great great great grandpa was from Africa doesn't make you African. If you want equality call yourself American not some hyphenated crap. amirite?

And if they're a first generation immigrant?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that's different.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Then they're from wherever they're from

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I bet OP is white.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

*European-American. Unless they are from europe.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(ashnicoleluvsblg):European-American? Are u fuckin' kidding me? If you're born in America you're American, if you're born in Europe you're European. How is this even debatable?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

but african-american is fine if you're born in america?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Device):No. That's just stupid. Why do people INSIST on having the "African" part in there? It doesn't make sense to me

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What if they're talking about their ethnicity, and not their nationality? Unless that person isn't really black, just their great great great Grandfather..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sorry, I will always refer to myself as Black American. It's a point of pride, like saying you are Irish, Italian, etc. Why can't I be proud of both aspects of my heritage?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I had exactly the same post a while back. We can see you're black/ indian /asian... It's been like 200 years, I think you have the right to be called American by now... And if it's to be proud of your heritage, then how about the Latin-African-Asian-Americans? Heck, then I'm Spanish-European-South-African from now on.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How about them? They have the same right to refer to themselves by their heritage as I do. If you don't feel the need to differentiate, or to state your heritage then don't. I choose to.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

exactly do i go around calling myself spanish-american NO mainly because im not spanish or american but that's beside the point

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i am a Canadian but my background is that of irish/scottish/british i don't go around clamming to be all of that i'm just Canadian.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'll stop referring to myself as mostly of English, German and Welsh decent when people stop thinking Americans are stupid and fat. There's a reason a lot of us want to be proud of our heritage.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's pretty simple for me, I'm just a Kiwi.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Race, ethnicity and country are different things. Why are Americans the only people to put 'em all into one as a matter of "pride"?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I definately see your point and kind of agree but it is just a pride thing. America is an extremely young nation made of nothing but immigrants. When you live in a country with almost no history behind it yet, people are going to want something to hold onto, some sort of memory of all the places their families hailed from.
