I recently read "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell, and he says that the reason why asians are so good at math is because their words are shorter. Their number system is much more primitive than, for example, the english number system. For instance they say 10-1, 10-2 to say 11, 12, because of this chinese children excel in math quicker, since basics like adding and subtracting come easily to them. A head start that seems to be trivial at first eventually widens to a huge gap. So, when you think about it their primitivity promoted their excellence. Which is kind of like saying their stupidity made them smarter.
