+154 Albus Dumbledore turning out to be gay was one of the best things JKR has ever done, amirite?

I'm disagreeing but only because she broke the fourth wall. She's not supposed to give interpretation on her own book after it's published. At that point the book belongs to the reader and is up to their interpretation. Nothing's wrong with what she said, she just shouldn't have said anything, or she should have written it more clearly if it was that important to her.

(Sorry I know this comment is from a while ago) but I just have to say that everyone was practically begging for more information about the characters after the books were over. That's why she told us who married Neville, Percy, Luna, etc., and I'm sure no one regrets her doing that. And she didn't just come out and announce it publicly. What happened was that in the sixth movie, the directer wanted to have Dumbledore mention something about a previous romantic relationship with a woman. JKR asked him to leave it out, commenting that she always imagined that Dumbledore was gay. She should definitely have the right to influence how the movie producers present her characters, but of course news got out of what she said on the set. Later on, she elaborated on it by saying that he was in love with Grindelwald when he was younger after a fan asked her if Dumbledore ever found love.

You learn something every day! I didn't know it was that involved, truth be told. But she still broke the fourth wall, IMO by elaborating. The movie part, I understand, but really she shouldn't have to cater to fans about facets of characters that are trivial. I know it sounds harsh, and I understand wanting to know as much about a character as possible, but I believe that a character is a unique creation for everyone because everyone "meets" them with a different perspective. But thank you for the explanation, I had always just heard that she revealed/announced/came out with that he was gay.

I certainly understand what you're saying; it just seems like a lot of people are uniformed about the way it came out. It makes me angry when people think it was some big media stunt or something, because JKR wouldn't do that.

I kind of figured he was gay, just going off of the ole' gaydar. Byut, I never actually saw anything in the books..so was he really? (And) I'm sorry, I never heard about her saying anything, so, what did she say?

The best thing she did was end the series.

I hated that it was such an afterthought. Oh yeah, he's gay. Come on, if you actually intended that to be the case, you wouldn't have had to confirm it. I felt very cheated. And I disagree - I read the whole series several times, and Dumbledore was not gay. I don't think he was sexual in any way - hetero or homo. What JK Rowling says won't change that.

Yeah, I always thought he was just asexual, haha.

She has stated that after the whole thing with Grindelwald, he led a celibate and bookish life. He learned what love could do to him. So yes, the Dumbledore we knew was essentially asexual. (Sorry, I know this comment is from a few months ago)

I'm pretty sure she actually said that for her, Dumbledore was gay When I heard it for the first time,I wasn't surprised, as part of me always had known it. It just never came to my mind to even think about his sexual orientation, so yeah...

I think it was a very low mark from a highly distinguished writer. All in the effect of shattering personal interpretations held by her readers, spinning unnecessary controversy into her series, an corrupting the message of love by entangling it with a socially uncomfortable area. Just in general, shame on you.

He's obviously asexual. He reproduces by cell division. Unfortunately, he never has enough time to make a complete copy of himself, and so ends up cremating all of the half-completed bodies.

But, what does it matter anyway? Dumbledore is Dumbledore, doesn't matter if he's gay or straight or anything else, he's still Dumbledore

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thats true, but it's fun to speculate about what could happen. That's the theory that Fanfiction was founded on.

If it mattered to his character, it would have been in the book. She was just grabbing for attention. If she wanted to actually make a statement, she would have said something while the books were being released, but she's clearly afraid that nobody would buy the books. Conversely, the whose series can be a metaphor for homosexuality. Harry starts in the closed, nobody accepts him, until he finds people who are like him and a group he can fit in with...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

With that logic, it's also a metaphor for sex. Harry starts sheltered and innocent, and then he learns all about "magic"....

but the closet imagery is so good! But yeah, people doing wondrous things with their wands...
