The candy acted instantly and probably felt and tasted a lot better than two fingers down the throat. Also, it would be more socially acceptable. "Uh oh, someone's coming...My god, I'm gonna curse the ears off whoever gave me this candy!"

Also, I think it was constant throw-up that the pastilles gave you. So it would look like you can't control it. And then you eat the other half and you're all better.
