-335 You know an economics class should be required when people think soldiers should be paid more than football players, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I get that this is saying we have nowhere near enough money to pay soldiers more than we pay athletes, but I think football players and stuff don't need half the money they get. They're not risking their lives to save ours, all they do is run around on a field and stop eachother from getting to the other side.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree. Thinking that soldiers should be payed more than football players is only economically unfeasible if football players are payed enormous salaries. Football players don't need half the money they get? They really barely deserve 1/8th of what they get.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I dont even understand why professional athletes are paid so highly. They get millions of dollars to play a game.. It's pretty ridiculous.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's a demand for them really

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because people are willing to pay for the tickets. If people stopped going or watching the games their salary would drop. And they're used in product promotions, so they're paid for every commercial paid.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But just even being on the team, no promotions or shoe lines, an athlete makes a hundred thousand dollars a game. All they do is play. And receive a disgusting amount of money for it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But that's because the teams can afford to. If the teams stop getting so much revenue (from people buying tickets and TV stations paying to show the game) then the team couldn't afford to pay the players what they currently do.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that coaches get paid more than teachers.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And when it's a teacher coaching they get a big pay boost.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Pro Athletes get paid WAYY too much money. The jobs that really matter (soldiers, EMTs, firefighters..etc) should be getting paid more then someone dilly daddling around a field for a couple hours.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There's no way that's possible. But I do say that athletes shouldn't be paid as much. Actually, athletes should be paid close to nothing, because they contribute absolutely nothing to society besides entertainment.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Entertainment is just as valuable as anything, though...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

We could find other forms of entertainment though. Get out and play the games ourselves and stop putting money into the pockets of those that don't need it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How mundane would life be with the freedom that our soldiers give us, but without forms of entertainment? You know who really doesn't deserve millions of dollars a year? CEO's of supercorporations and leaders of countries, there should be caps on their salaries

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Watching tv/movies/sports isn't the only form of entertainment out there. Although I also do agree with your CEO statement.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That first sentence kind of hurt my heart. Personally, I'd rather be free and bored than not have that freedom but be surrounded by well-paid football players.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Exactly! I mean, jeeze, how did people EVER entertain themselves before televised sports and TVs? HOW DID WE SURVIVE??

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I didnt mean to chose between one of the options, personally I would chose the former as well, but we need a mix of both to live happy lives

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why should CEOs not get paid as much as they do? They worked thir asses off to get to where they are and are obviously running successful companies. They may get paid a lot but they have a lot to lose as well.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because they don't do anything. Besides tell someone lower than them to do something, which in turn that person passes off to someone lower... Plus what do they contribute to society? I guarantee that if Bill Gates were to just keel over and die, Microsoft would still keeping pumping out computers.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

With severance packages ranging in the tens to hundreds of millions, they don't have much to lose. And I only say that because 90% of the time they succumb to greed and stop thinking about the workers that MAKE them successful

by Anonymous 12 years ago

By that logic, actors and musicians should be paid close to nothing because they contribute nothing but entertainment

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yep. It's what I think and I'm sticking to it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Please tell me you mean because football players are paid more than soldiers. If people honestly think that someone should be paid more to throw a ball around than to fight for our country, then our society is fucked.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't believe they deserve to be paid more, but it would be economically impossible if we decided to pay soldiers as much as football players.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Morally, ethically and logically it makes sense that soldiers should be paid more, but yes economically it's impossible.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Football players should get paid a LOT less, and soldiers should get paid a bit more. I agree it's not economically possible to have soldiers getting paid what football players are getting paid now. But football players should be earning less than a soldier. They should still get a decent salary, but they definitely don't need as much as they're currently getting.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree that it's kinda messed up that football players are paid more than soldiers. But if the clubs can afford it, why not?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think soccer[football] is interesting but I think soldiers should be paid more or atleast be worth more.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Soccer = Futbol, Football = Football

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Soccer can actually be called all 3. It is actually referred to as association football. Futbol is what most hispanic people call soccer or football. If you don't believe me you can google ''list of things countries call soccer'' and click the first link but knowing you didn't do that I have provide a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_for_association_football and then a site that is cool:http://thekickback.com/rickroll/rickroll.php

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But to avoid all that, it's easier to just call it futball.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

As others have said or implied, people don't say that soldiers should be paid more than football players because they're clueless about the economy. It's the moral reasoning that bothers most. Soldiers risk their lives to defend us and our country. Football players toss around a ball and tackle other people for enjoyment.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Economically speaking, it makes sense that people who are really good at minor things like football or acting get paid a lot. Whenever your job requires a rare skill you get paid more. Teachers get paid so little because pretty much anyone can teach (or so my teacher said). Engineers get paid so much because not everyone is that good at math and stuff. They let anyone in the military but not on an NFL football team. Ethically speaking, the people who work harder should get paid more, but the economy doesn't run on ethics, it runs on supply and demand.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

they let anyone in the military, yes, but many people do not have the mindset or the physical capabilities to put themselves through army training or war. and many people can teach, but not everybody can; they may not have the knowledge or the capability to deal with raising the future of the world. but yes, supply and demand is how capitalist economies work - it's unfortunate sometimes, but it's true.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This is exactly what I was going to say.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's exactly what I mean. Thank you for this!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

im sorry i didnt know that football players risked their lives every day for their country

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i do agree that by the sheer amount of soldiers there are, it wouldn't be possible for them to be paid near as much as football players are, but football players SHOULD be paid less that they are. then again, that doesn't work, because football players' salaries work like this: the more interest (demand) there is in football/their team, the more money they get, whether it's through more advertisers, more merchandise sold, more tickets sold, etc. so there's not really too much you can do about this situation :/

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree. Income is determined by the principles of supply and demand. It has nothing to do with how moral your job is. Also look at America's military budget. Clearly, paying the soldiers millions of dollars more would be stupid. The military has too much money already, it's draining the countries economy and crippling our markets. As Robert Fulghum said, "It will be a great day when our schools have all the money they need, and our air force has to have a bake-sale to buy a bomber."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Personally, I am not a huge fan of football players or soldiers, as I don't like football and I don't like war. However- both believe they are doing something worthwhile, and I respect them for that.
