Call me an ignorant amerifag...but I'm confused.

Great Britain consists of England, Scotland, and Wales, so someone from England is British, but British doesn't exclusively mean English.
Then again, I am American so I might be wrong.

Okay, that's what I thought. I just wasn't sure since I don't know why it would be annoying to be called British :P

Because americans think all of britain is the same. Eg when they talk about british accents. There is no british accent, there are loads of different ones

Aren't they the same thing? XD

Just because we are attached to the others doesn't mean we're all the same, it's like calling Spanish people European, they are in Europe but they have their own identity. On the census form I wrote that I am English, not British :)

I get that being called "English" is more specific, but what exactly is so annoying?

*le shrug* I'm Scottish and I don't mind being called British.
