It's a generational transition - my paternal grandfather had 12 siblings, my paternal grandmother had 7. Nowadays people have more choice and options in regards to birth control, contraception, whether they'd rather focus on careers or other things, having fewer children due to the cost of living, etc. Years ago, getting married and having children was expected - we have far more opportunities and alternatives than our parents or grandparents.

And sadly, there are now parents who are only children, as in, teenage pregnancy...
