its always going to be the point of the movie if they dont end up together. how is the point of the moving going to be that they get together when they dont

I think you misunderstood what I wrote... There are so many movies where people get together when that isn't really necessary to the story, so it's a nice change when the male and female lead don't end up a couple. The parenthesis was referring to romance movies where the point of the movie is obviously that the two will be a couple at some point.
