-161 If you think about it, every word must be the name of a number, because numbers go on forever and if they didn't use every word available they'd run out of names for numbers much sooner, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There also an infinite amount of possible names that aren't words, so not every word has to be a number.

If numbers go on forever, every single sound, word or not, must be a number.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Words don't have a limit for how long they can be. So no. You could repeat a sound x times, and depending on how many times you would repeat it it would mean a different number. Just an hypothesis.

There can be an infinite amount of syllables in a word.

I never thought of that, my comment was really stupid. Ah well.

Nah, all numbers use the words 'one, two, three etc twenty, thirty, forty etc hundred, thousand, million etc' to actually make up the number. so the number 123,456,789 is just all the numbers from 1to9 recycled with the added 'million, thousand, hundred etc'. this goes on to infinity. But the word 'psychology' isn't likely to stand for a number such as a trillion billion million or whatever.

"I have a psychology things to do today!" I think it'll catch on.

So, every word that you used in your post is the name of a number? :P I think they'd just make up new words if they needed them, but chances are, there's already words for every number there is. Like, hundred, thousand, hundred-thousand, million, billion, etc. They just string the words together to make up the bigger numbers. Like, twenty million hundred-thousand billion and thirty-five. :P

Even if it's not true, it still makes you stop and think for a minute.. What if every word was a number?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Every word would be a number only if we made it such. Think about it, someone had to say one million was officially called "million."

I think my brain just blew up, reverted to normal, and blew up again.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That...oh Lord, that doesn't even make sense.

You know, huge numbers can be written with this magical thing called standard form, where you can show a number as one digit followed by any number of decimal places, multiplied by 10^x. Only requires words for numbers zero through ten.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol it's just a thought...like my favorite number would be gingersnap :)
