+221 When you watch movies like "Freedom Writers" or "Dead Poets Society" you always think, "It would be amazing if just one of my teachers actually cared like that about his/her students." amirite?

I had one. One of the best teachers in the school. He got fired too

Why did he get fired?

A lot of students were failing his class...not because he didn't teach the material, but he held everyone to a higher standard. It was an honors class btw

Most of my teachers do care about their students.

There are quite a bit of teachers here that do care and do try very hard to get to their students...er, with knowledge, of course. But the secret is that it's the //students// don't give two fucks. I haven't seen these movies but I'm assuming most of it was from the teacher's perspective and the only time it was related to a student was when the student had some big problem and came to the teacher and then the teacher helped them and the students became willing to learn because they grew closer with the teacher? Is that right? That doesn't happen in real life. I'm sure these are encouraging, inspirational movies, but reality is harsher than that.

Freedom Writers is about a teacher who buys her students journals to learn about their lives because they say she has no idea what their lives are like. These kids are gang members and in remedial classes. It's based on a true story. She bought the kids brand new books because the school didn't trust them to use the school's books. It's my favorite movie because it shows that teachers can go the extra mile and really make a difference. Most of the kids say surviving everyday is enough, but she shows them that they deserve more than just surviving.

Ahh, I remember seeing the first half of the movie in English sometime ago. We stopped watching for some reason. Disappointing, because I was beginning to like it.

So true, I bet most teachers started out fine and dandy and actually care about their students but over time the shear amount of students who didn't give a fuck broke their spirits.

Can you imagine dealing with 80+ kids five days a week, most of whom really don't want to be there, and show it? I'd stop giving a fuck too after a while.

If the teacher who showed me Dead Poets Society really gave a fuck, she wouldnt make me sit through such a boring movie.

Dead Poets Society is one of the best and most inspirational movies I've ever seen. My favorite teacher from middle school showed it to my class, and when I mentioned it to my freshmen English teacher she had no idea what I was talking about. In my personal opinion I think you're lucky your teacher even knew what it was, let alone showed it to you.

i really liked Freedom Writers though.

The thing is most teachers do care, and they do try to go the extra mile. Those teachers in the movies are extreme cases, they put their lives at risk to help the children. Most teachers have lives and it would be unfair to put them to that high of a standard.

It really is a shame that so many teachers are teachers just "because". There definitely are teachers that care out there, but it's hard not to get jaded with dealing with apathetic, disrespectful students.
