It was a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem "The Raven," in which the main character is trying to forget about his lost wife and says, "Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!" 'Quaff' means to drink and 'nepenthe' is an ancient drug that makes you forget about your sorrows and troubles.
