+748 You wish kids would have more respect for teachers, amirite?

Respect isn't a gift, you have to earn it. [That's in Spanish on a poster in a classroom, but it makes sense] Some teachers don't deserve respect, though. My history teacher is a crazy man who hasn't taught us anything but flaunts his beliefs around and uses so much favoritism. My chem teacher, on the other hand, gives a lot of work but keeps her opinions to herself [except for nuclear energy] and everyone in that class is learning a lot. We all kind of hate her for giving us work, but we all respect her. Not /all/ teachers deserve respect. If they hate what they're doing and you and your classmates suffer as a result, it's not at all fair or respect-worthy. [tl;dr]

I agree completely! Most of the teachers that I have are fantastic. But kids talk trash about them just because they don't like the subject, or the think the teacher is boring. I think over all most students don't realize how much work being a teacher is and how little they get paid doing so.

Sure some kids just need to learn to shut the fuck up and sit down sometimes, but some teachers really don't deserve respect. My Language Arts teacher doesn't teach us, she just yells all the time. And kids are always afraid to raise their hands cause if they don't get the answer right she will just yell and scream for the next 7 minutes. Same goes for asking questions (which you kinda have to do if you want to learn something). She also has no respect for the kids. There's been more than one occasion when she commented on a student's weight, and she even brought a student to tears because she was screaming at him for literally the whole period for not having a pen. Yep she's pretty bad.

Teachers like the one you talked about, don't deserve respect. Like I said above, it's teachers that are friendly, give work/test when they should, and just do their job well, deserve the respect. Also (as I said above), some students don't give teachers respect just because they don't like the subject. Good teachers deserve respect. Teachers like the one you talked about, don't deserve respect.

AMEN. when i become a teacher, oh i'll definitely be strict on my students if they don't do as i say. my english teacher called on this 1 kid in my english class to read this ONE slide on a powerpoint she spent all last night making and all it said was "Don't forget to use in-text citations. you need to give credit to the ones who..." and it finished the sentence. so she calls on this kid to read it and he goes "hmmn nah i don't feel like reading." and she's like "Bruce (his name) please read it, come on" and he's like "nahh. *puts his head down and sleeps*" man if i were her, i would've sent him to the office or something, he has no respect for her and it pisses me off because she busts her ass for our class to help us with things like scholarship essays and stuff, she does that out of HER time...and i hate how students don't realize that and appreciate it enough to give her respect...it's so stupid. kids are only disrespectful because of their most likely disrespectful parents.

I don't know...sure some kids were disrespectful, but they just didn't care at all. Others showed respect, but it seemed too formal. I think a friendly relationship would work where you can talk to them and not have to worry about them interpretting any bad habits out of you.

If the teachers deserve respect, then I'm more than happy to comply, but I'll agree with the others. If a teacher definitely doesn't respect the students either, then showing them respect regardless is a waste of effort. I definitely respected my teachers when they were more like "friends" than "teachers" and were more understanding toward the students. They never acted as if they were better than the student and even though there was a lot of homework, they obviously showed how proud they were of the student when good grades were made. However, the teachers that were disrespectful to the students (For example: Last semester, my teacher made a racial comment about how Chinese people were communists and that's why they didn't use a works cited--in front of Asian students) or showed no care or effort for teaching do not deserve much (if any) respect at all.

It works the other way too. Teachers should have more respect for kids. Not all teachers are the hardworking heroic men and women people think they are. There are some teachers who inspire you and encourage you and there are some teachers who make you hide in the bathroom stall so you don't have to go to homeroom in 6th grade.
