+292 It's weird that tipping ever became a thing. Why should customers pay for part of a waiter's salary? The restaurant should just pay waiters the appropriate amount, amirite?

It's just kind of working on commission. (In theory) If you suck, you earn less and if you rock that Denny's uniform you earn more.

Not really, through tipping they get paid based on their performance so they'll be more motivated to work better.

problem is no one really gets tipped based on how well they did. if they do it's a rare occasion. they get tipped based on how generous the people being served are. they could have been the best waiter/ess ever but the people could be assholes and not even tip.

Tip originally stood for To Insure Promptness. If the waiter wanted to get a little cash gift, he'd have to serve quickly and efficiently. I don't know why restaurants are adding it into the bill now. That seems more like paying part of their salary to me. Tips should be optional.

We never tip based on their ability, we usually add on 15%.
