I hesitate to describe myself as an athiest because of everything it connotes, but I don't believe in any "god" that I've ever heard described. But, yes. I believe that there is more to death than oblivion. I think most people get stuck between choosing either/or with "heaven" or "nothing", but personally I've always noticed that when it comes down to only two clear cut choices, neither are usually right. It's been established that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, and I don't see how whatever it is that keeps us conscious is any different.

Why the hell would I believe that? What is so hard about people facing the fact that after death, there is nothing? As far as what cuban says above, I disagree. The energy in our body is the nutrients we obtain from food, the sun, and the air - it all returns to the ground, and life goes on. Just as it did before we were born.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's not a fact. Just saying.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The whole notion of "heaven" and "hell" and an "afterlife" is only because we as human beings love to think of ourselves as the center of the universe, the pinnacle of existence in the universe. We literally believed that up until about 500 years ago when Galileo disproved that. Surely something as great as ourselves doesn't die and cease to exist like a common dog or squirrel? Well… newsflash, we're all made of the same stuff. We're smarter, more evolved, etc., but we're still animals. Religion is another tribute to our own egocentric nature

by Anonymous 12 years ago

-shrug- Until you bring the idea of souls into it. I don't feel like arguing about this, but just being devil's advocate.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You can believe that if you want. That doesn't make it a fact.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with believing that. But too often people turn to atheism because "god" disappointed them and life isn't perfect. Well no shit, you know? But whatever "nutrients" I obtain doesn't form who I am, they are what sustains who I am. I dunno, to me most religions seem childish, but honestly so does atheism. You don't have to pick a team, you know.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't believe in a god because I don't know how to properly distinguish one from the other, that in addition to there being a pitiful amount of evidence for it. It is not a product of 'being disappointed in god' or whatever the hell you just said, what makes you think you can even make such an accusation?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because you aren't the only athiest I've spoken to? Why are you offended? That wasn't actually directed towards you, I said it because almost every athiest I have ever spoken to has said something similar. Also, I'm not necessarily a theist, so calm down sir. I'm not attacking you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

?? I don't get it. I gave you a perfectly normal response. if that's what you find to be an overreaction of some sort, I'd hate to see how you'd react to someone who truly is angry.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, to me it sounded a bit angry. If I misread, my mistake. But I reiterate, I wasn't attacking you. By the way, was I rude to you?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No. You're fine.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree with what you're saying about some(not all) people expecting the world to be perfect and getting mad at God, but scientifically what you're saying is wrong. All of the energy in our bodies is transferred back into the Eco system when we decompose, consciousness/a soul is not tangible energy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not that we KNOW of. Look, I'm not saying that I think for certain our "soul" moves on, I'm just saying denying the possibility altogether is a bit childish. I mean who fucking knows, you know?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not denying that souls exist I'm just saying if they do then they aren't energy like you're saying. If they were then you're suggesting the "soul" energy would go to heaven/oblivion, correct? If this happened the Earth would be losing energy and eventually run out.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

because as you quoted earlier matter cannot be created or destroyed, the souls that went to where ever would slowly be taking that much energy out of circulating the Eco system and eventually it would all be used up by the souls.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hmm. I disagree with that. I think whatever energy we obtain from the earth to run our bodies likely stays here. But I don't think the energy that makes up our "soul" originated here.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

People with common sense. Also, *atheist

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are no facts, just speculation. Unless you actually died you don't know. Neither do I. Sorry, but it really bugs me when people spout their opinions like they're facts. That's what keeps these conversations so stunted. Also, my phone spells it athiest, I'll correct it later.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's beyond me that statements like 'there just has to be SOME sort of afterlife!', 'it just seems so right!' and 'we can't just go no where!' are actually thought of as serious arguments for life after death.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol exactly

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Then where does your conciousness go? (I'm not tryin to mock you guys, I'm just curious)
