Reading is a hobby, just like any other. Readers aren't better than non-readers, and vice versa.

Exactly, it seems like the "bookworms" of the world feel like they're superior to others just because they enjoy reading. Personally, I find fiction literature generally a waste of time and I'd rather actually learn something. This post is implying (by saying they're "seriously lacking something") that reading is the most enlightening experience a person can have and is truly life changing. Calling out kids who think they're better than you because they don't read is just as conceited as the (likely imaginary) kids who think it's cool not to read. Talk about hypocritical.

@1316301 (DanielJames): Wow, it's sad to see that this post was misconstrued in such a manner. Perhaps I chose the wrong term, in saying "lacking." I simply meant that books can be used for a myriad of things, and that those blinded by their pursuit of "coolness" are missing out on a great way to entertain oneself.

We didn't misconstrue the post, we interpreted it correctly with the language you used. If your had been similar to your comment, I would've YYA'd.

I see what you mean. When I said the post was misconstrued, I meant when I took the idea and put it in words, not when you read it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Fair enough, but I think you're misinterpreting why people don't read. In my experience, very few people don't read because they think it's not cool (how many negatives was that?), but rather it's because it's not their cup of tea. But I do agree books can be powerful just like any other form of media. I was a bit ranty about bookworms in general, which is my bad, just because bookworms seem to think books are the ultimate form of media, which is wrong.

That makes sense, and you're probably right. However, only those who don't read because it's uncool to do so are the subjects of the post. Not those for whom "it's not their cup of tea."

Go back 2 englind u reading homo.

It makes me mad that a similar sarcastic comment is voted up and yours is down. angry

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This again? I'm assuming you were talking about people who actually think they're better than others because they don't read. In that case, they arrogant. So there really shouldn't be an argument against Readers Vs Non-readers. It should be about Readers AND Non-readers Vs Arrogant people who think they're better than Readers because they don't read.

Personally, I love to read. But I also agree with the people above me: reading is a hobby. Not everyone has to love it. As long as they have basic reading skills they're fine.

Like those kids in my class when we are supposed to be reading a book of our choice (anything) they go for the children's comic books and when that's not allowed they claim reading is boring and stupid. Ever since the 2nd grade I always picked books with 100-700+ pages, love reading.

I don't like to read because of my lack of dedication. It pains me to start reading a book and then stop because it feels like a waste if I don't finish it. I like to read though, i mean this this site is based on reading, and reading other people's thoughts is just my favorite way of entertainment in my short periods of free time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I dont really like reading, it's just boring for me, but i'm not doing so to be "cool".

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I guess books are just like anything else. Yes, they can teach you something and help you to enhance your mind, but then again so can almost anything. Whether or not you like books is your own choice.
