+146 It's stupid whenever someone says Latin is a dead language, because many Latin words are the roots and derivatives of commonly used words today, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Latin is called a dead language because the words/frases can no longer change meaning.

A language is considered "dead" when they " are no longer spoken by anyone as his or her main language".

Sumus vos plumbeus. :P

So because you're related to your great great great grandfather makes him less dead?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, it IS a dead language so people saying that isn't stupid. What's stupid is when people say it's pointless learning it, because it's dead.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's dead, no one actually speaks it anymore and no one actually knows how to pronounce its words either.

It's a dead language because it's no longer widely spoken. People still learn it as a second language true, people can still read it, yes, but it's nobody's first language anymore, much less a group of people's. But to what the OP said to make a point about it, about how many Latin words are used as the roots of words and everything...dead but not forgotten. But still dead.

This is like saying our ancestors are still alive because they are our roots.
