+39 it's sad that around 40% of americans don't believe in evolution, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why? People can believe what they want to believe.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Rejecting evolution because it's 'just a theory' is rejecting gravity because it, too, is 'just a theory' http://www.notjustatheory.com/ Not directed at you exactly, but more to the following commenters who will, no doubt, be spamming that argument

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Those of us who reject evolution don't always reject it because it's "just a theory." I have my reasons for it. I don't reject string theory because it's "just a theory," I reject it because it's crazy as shit.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Until someone introduces a better idea, I believe in evolution. It's a hell of a lot more plausible than creationism.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not when something is clearly true.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well I'd would actually like to know the percentage that think the theory is evil. That's MUCH more sad

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's what I was thinking. People are free to believe what they want, but when they start belittling the other side with an argument based in opinion, that is just wrong. If you believe in Creationism because you were raised that way, but you still see evolution as a viable option, I don't think there is anything wrong with that

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Is this statistic true? if so where did you get it? im just curious at such a high percentage.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I like to believe God used evolution as a tool. So yes, I believe in God, and evolution. Shoot me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, I'm sure some people believe they must sacrifice turkeys to the llama king, but you and I can't make them think different. If it makes them happy, let them believe in what they want. (example A: Santa's existence... it does no harm to enjoy the idea as a kid)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Can we get a link to the stats?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

http://www.gallup.com/poll/114544/darwin-birthday-believe-evolution.aspx This is the only related poll I could find, which shows somewhat lower statistics, finding 1 in 4 who do not believe in evolution as opposed to 4 out of 10. There were a large percentage of people who were undecided though, which I suppose could go either way.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Micro- or macro- evolution? Because I'm all for microevolution

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Isn't macroevolution essentially the result of microevolution over a long period of time? Haven't both also been observed in nature?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've always thought of macro- as one species radically changing, like apes to humans

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's a result of microevolution, because with enough small changes to the genetic makeup of a species, it will eventually become incompatible with earlier generations. I'm not sure why people are downvoting you for expressing your point of view.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wait, I didn't realize this was a matter of your faith. Although I 'believe' in both micro- and macroevolution, I think microevolution is a good compromise between complete belief in evolution and complete lack of belief.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I like compromise

by Anonymous 12 years ago

inb4--- damn it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Believing in evolution and God is way too confusing. But thats just me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I didn't read all the comments (tl;dr) so I might be a little behind here, but a majority of people think evolution is just the ape--->human chart which is just someone's misunderstanding of Darwin (Darwin never said we were apes.) So that's why they don;t believe. If more people know evolution was the FACT we came from something that came from something else that came from single celled organisms, then mostly everyone who is right-minded and not a jesus freak would believe in it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't want to start an argument. I'm just stating a point... the single-celled organism that you claim would make everything else, would also have to come from something. It's not possible that out of nowhere the organism was created. So, how did that single-celled organism come to "be"? Just curious in your theory.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, cells are made from proteins, lipids, nucleotides, etc. Living things are things. Life and the fact we have a POV is are just lucky abilities caused by these combinations of chemicals (which are scientifically formed not by luck, but by chance since life elements like carbon are able to form chains.) So in conclusion of that statement. In these scientific matters, all life-forms are just as much objects made of matter as a rock or a lamp. Back to the beginning... Big bang theory. I assume you're a smart guy, so I won't explain it. So that's how I believe it started. Then Earth came into existence and was able to support life after the crust hardened and water molecules formed and made water, where carbon chains and all these other chemicals (lipids, nucleotides, proteins) made cells which could be supported by the water and by whatever they fed off of. Those cells evolved and became more complex organisms.

Darwin never said we were apes because WE NEVER WERE. Our ancestors were, and over millions of years and tiny little changes, we slowly took on a form similar to ours today.

If consciousness has always been entirely possible with only the aid of some sort of simple, non-physical structure or material as religion claims, there is yet to be a single example of this that has been even remotely verified or studied by any human; there is a complete and utter absence of not only where this occurs, but how it is possible, or even what it exactly is, yet theists seem to find the inverse "belief" of vast physical components working together that appear to be empirical evidence for cumulative processes, all of which entirely accounted for in evolution, such a radical idea. Yet they find their idea to be more reasonable than the alternative.. why? As it stands, not only is this highly absurd, it begs the question of why we carry these physical organs around, comprised of extremely complex inner workings and structures, just to produce what could have been produced when there was absolutely no need for such complications in the first place?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's almost as if their god designed us to be evidence against him.. is that not a valid contradiction to the honest nature of the Christian god? Is this all not in desperate need to be accounted for?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sorry, in the first sentence, it should say "immaterial".

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You know what else is weird, there are rocks that couldn't have formed with the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere now, and, as most Creationists will say, the atmosphere has always been the same. Well, I guess I call bullshit on that. Also, there were a bunch of people who got crucified who thought they were the messiah, so what makes this Jesus guy so special?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's even more sad that you're calling someone else's beliefs sad. That's ridiculous and very ignorant.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Go away...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

People like that never learn.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Haven't any of them played pokemon

by Anonymous 12 years ago

well if humans were able to recreate parts of evolution (like the evolution of the cell from primordial soup by Miller and Urey) then creationism doesn't make sense. Would God have made his creations REcreatable by humans?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Also i think tadpoles are living proof of evolution.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ono Seriously?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why do you say that? Tadpoles are proof that amphibians and fish have common ancestry. Obviously none of you took basic college biology classes on evolution.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I apologize. I assumed you were referring to the metamorphosis of tadpoles into frogs. Obviously, this was an incorrect assumption.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

lol its ok, i guess i should've been more specific, i thought everyone learned this?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

40% of Americans just haven't evolved yet.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Did you know 87% of statistics are made up on the spot?
