It's because they didn't realize it at first, but their wife is a total bitch and their only reasonable choice is to stay in the marriage. If they get a divorce, then Misses Bitch will get all of the man's stuff in the process of becoming Miss Bitch. Or they can't financially afford to get a divorce without losing all their stuff after said discovery. Love is blind.
