-76 Being omniscient and being omnipotent are mutaually exclusive. If you're omniscient, then you know everthing that will happen in the future. Which means that you already know what you will do in the future. Which means that you can't change your mind about what you're going to do. And if you can't change your mind, that's something you are unable to do, which makes you not omnipotent. amirite?

sounds like the "God can't create a rock so big that he can't move it" thing

So you think it's possible to be omniscient and omnipotent? How could that be?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, I don't necessarily believe in God right now...kinda on the fence. But God does change his mind in the Bible on several occasions (such as when Lot asks Him to spare Sodom). I think people take "omnipotent" to a level it's not meant to go to. It is supposed to show God's power in being able to do anything, not to be used to put Him into a logical dichotomy that doesn't even matter.

My original post doesn't mention God.

I made an assumption, since 99.9% of the time when people use "omniscient" and "omnipresent" in the same sentence, it is about God. Was I correct?

I don't know.

Being all-knowing, why would you ever need to change your mind about something? And even if you did want to change your mind, you'd already know that you were going to change your mind, therefore you do have the ability.

Being omnipotent means you don't even operate within time, something you probably can't comprehend.

Hypothetically speaking, couldn't an omnipotent and omniscient being exist? What if there was a being who was omniscient and knew what was going to happen, but needed to use it's omnipotent powers in order for this "ultimate plan" to work out? Also, your post only makes the slightest bit of sense if you're operating under the assumption that there is only one timeline - only one "plan".

didn't bother reading the whole thing, but u spelled mutually wrong so i no way'd it

Omnipotent is all powerful. Omniscient is all knowing. No said anything about God being all logical.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Being all knowing also means you know everything you MIGHT do, and therefore know which option is best and never have to change your mind. But if you felt like it, since you're omnipotent as well, you could anyways.
