+788 It's weird to think that in several decades, Harry Potter will be thought of as a "classic", and English teachers will hold long lectures on how Dobby symbolized man's link to an ostracizing society, or whatever, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I almost hope it never does become a classic so English teachers don't ruin it...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The hardcore fans already ruined it.

Somehow, I don't think that the Harry Potter series will ever be studied in English classes. First, it's way too long, and the only one that could be read without any background would be the first book, which isn't even the climax of the series. Also, many have noted JK Rowling's writing style's similarities to Roahl Dahl and C.S. Lewis, both authors who are usually read in third or fourth grade. The Harry Potter series is too complex of a book to read at that age and still understand all the underlying themes and symbols enough to discuss them during class. Plus, it's hard to read a book like that without obsessing over it; usually when teachers make me read a book, I can't get into it, since I'm being forced to read it.

I'd love to have a semester long Harry Potter class though. All seven books, disecting pot theories, the works.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My sister got to take one of those!

It's already happened at ASU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv6xn_h-9Jk

It's weird to think that you assume Harry Potter will become a classic.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's kind of sad to think about. I love Harry Potter and it would be weird to see it as those books that teachers overanalyze.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Honestly, it's not the right book for English classes. There's far too much "fluff"

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The only books that could really be analyzed like that are the fifth up, all of which are to long for school.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe the fourth book, actually.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Just be glad that youll hopefully be out of school by then..

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Unfortunately, parents would probably complain about "witchcraft" and "dark magic" poisoning their child's mind. Then you'd have kids who dislike reading that would ruin the books with complaints and the like. Overall, it would not be an enjoyable experience for fans or teachers

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are plenty of books we are forced to read that are controversial (Huck Finn) and just plain stupid ones (Antigone)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i dont think it will ever be "classic," but its an entertaining thought

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They can hardly be called a classic, the writing style is very poor, Although the plot is FUN to read, you can't analyze much of it aside from the Nazi-related ministry in the 7th book. . .

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Can you explain how the writing style is poor? I personally thought that the books were extremely well written.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In the first few books she writes her wording in a way an 8th grader would, and more of TELLS you something rather than SHOWS you, I'm not saying i didnt greatly enjoy the book, just I don't think it was very well written

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think her writing style improved a lot from book 1 to book 7.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because it started with a lot of room for improvement

by Anonymous 12 years ago

GEE that couldn't have ANYTHING to do with the fact that these books were intended to be CHILDREN'S BOOKS. Hmmm.... no that can't be it

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hrm, yeah, thats so true, because most toddlers i know pick up books that are 30+ pages, but ALL of the toddlers i know read full on novels...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"Children's Book" doesn't always mean "for Toddlers" it means those who are getting old enough to read chapter books, and yeah, novels. I started reading the series in first grade.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

''or whatever,'' hahahahaha.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I hope to god that it becomes a classic but there will never be a single kid that is forced to read it. It would just ruin the whole thing

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well isn't Great Expectatins aboiut 613 pages long? Abridged versions of the series could work.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

no! you cannot "abridge" Harry Potter. you just can't. that ruins everything

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It is a book so I am pretty sure that you can. They basically already did so in the movies anyway.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's not that they literally can't abridge it, it's just that abridging it would pervert the entire thing

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well that's just a matter of opinion is it not?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, it is. I just felt my opinion needed to be heard.
