+255 Some people bash pop music for having shallow meaning, but a lot of the time they don't even know the meaning of the songs that they like to listen to. amirite?

But they know the music they listen to has meaning. That's all that really matters to them.

Every song has meaning, even if it is shallow meaning.

And some people do.

As much as I hate to start an irrelevant argument, you have to admit there ARE a ton of pop songs with either overused, repeated meaning or no meaning whatsoever.

Also, sometimes I don't wanna listen to songs that have meaning. I just wanna listen to songs when I'm working out that are gonna get me pumped, or just songs that I enjoy singing along to when I'm doing chores, or just relaxing instrumentals when I'm doing homework.

this is when dubstep steps in.

There are songs in every genre that are incredibly meaningless. I really like pop music sometimes, and I think artists like KT Tunstall and Sia write really good songs. It's not all about the lyrics, sometimes it's about the beat and what music makes you feel a certain way.

I mean even if a song HAS a deep meaning, if you have no idea what it is then you shouldn't be criticizing other music over shallower meanings. It's hypocritical

Well, I'm listening to rock in general (progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, post-punk (revival), stuff like that) and I usually don't get the lyrics right, because English is not my first language and I'd need to focus to understand what these songs means (or look up the lyrics on the net) and I'm just too lazy and/or busy to do this this. By the way - you know, there are songs with no vocals at all (like most jazz songs) and you still can enjoy virtuosity and stuff like that. Or, they have vocals, but no lyrics. Like Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in the Sky". And I don't judge people who are listening to pop or not listening to music at all. I mean, in such case we should equally criticize people who don't watch classic films (I mean, be honest - how many of you watched "Schindler's List" or "12 Angry Men"?) or don't know the works of most important philosophers ("Haven't read Plato's "The Republic"? Shame on you!"). Let the people listen to what they enjoy. To these concerned with the length of this post - yup, I was pretty bored.
