+449 There's never really a polite way to say, "I wasn't talking to you". It always comes out sorta bitchy, amirite?

I briefly went to a school where if there was even an implied tone to your voice you'd get yelled at, and that sentence was a killer. Particularly when I'd "talk" to myself when reading. Apparently, "Sorry, I wasn't talking to you. I was reading out loud" is very offensive.

Sorry sir/ma'am I was talking to this person over here. I sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding.

This happens with my mom all the time. "What?" "I was talking to the cat." "...oh."

I usually just go "Oh, sorry, I was talking to ____, didn't mean to confuse you haha."
