+276 Suicide may be selfish, but so is asking someone to continue living miserably because you'd miss them, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know it sounds fucked up, but I think if a person wants to die they have a right to. Some people would rather be dead than in therapy and on medication that turns them into a zombie, for some people those things don't even work.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

anti depressants or other mood stabilizing medications dont turn you into a zombie, they block the reabsorption of serotonin so you have more of it in your blood, meaning that you are simply in more of a stable and rational condition. Furthermore, the drugs don't make you someone else, they make you the person you are, without the disease, eg depression, which is getting in the way. and finally, if it isnt working you should get the dosage checked.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I would know. I'm on anti depressants.

Which anonymous is this third comment from?

The first commenter/OP/me.

No one should kill themselves. Things get better.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You shouldn't do a lot of things, but you have the right to. Besides, this post isn't about if it's right or wrong, it's about how it's selfish and so are the people who want someone else to continue their miserable life so that they won't miss them. I feel like I said them too many times. Did it make sense?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes. It made sense. But everytime I say it's because I would miss people it is a last resort. After they stopped thinking things could get better and won't listen anymore. I don't know if thats how it is for everyone, however.

Suicide is a deeply complex subject.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The point of my post isn't that no one should commit suicide. My point is that people who expect someone to do continue doing something that makes them unhappy (living life) to make them happy are being hypocritical when they say suicide is selfish.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah. I understand now that this was the point of the post. It was downvoted for slight being slightly irrelevant.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Eh. I don't think it should have been.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Whoa, I just now noticed how fucked my reply was. My phone is dumb. But thanks for being nice about it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Eh? What was you're reply supposed to say?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"It was downvoted for being slighlty irrelevant."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Also, I thought of this after I left my first comment and it was too late to edit, but I don't know why this has any downvotes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from living life or it's going to kill you anyway or you're in a lot of debt, then I think suicide PWNS. 

I won't get into the entire debate, but I'll say this. It's selfish to kill yourself in front of a large amount of people in a public place, just for show or to be dramatic. I was at the Golden Gate Bridge a few years ago and watched a man jump some feet away from me, and I still remember it all even today. I've thought "why didn't I just say hi to him?". It's not fair that people kill themselves like that and leave others wondering and maybe partly blaming it on themselves for not helping or knowing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree. I've heard a lot of people who commit suicide will set it up so that either a lot of people of the person the blame for their suicidal thought will see them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's also really selfish to know you're going to commit suicide and tell someone else right beforehand. My friend texted me he was going to commit suicide, and then started saying stuff like "It's not your fault. It's too late. I've already done it. Tell the world to kiss my ass." And I called 911 and thankfully he lived, but if he had died I would have had to live with the guilt for the rest of my life. It's not fair. I wasn't even part of the reason.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

To the guy above me, that's honestly probably one of the most horrible things I've ever heard. I'm glad that he lived, but I don't see why you would want to make someone's life miserable by acting like it was your fault. That's really fucked up.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I never thought about it that way...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My view is that its selfish to kill oneself because nobody can fully know the effect their death will have on others. While you may be miserable, your death could cause everybody who knows and relies on you considerable misery, thus suicide is selfish. It comes down to numbers, if you dont kill yourself but you are miserable you are the only one suffering, instead of all of your peers. Also, think of Its a Wonderful Life, its impossible to image what life would be like without you prior to your death.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I never said it wasn't.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My point is mainly that it may be selfish both ways, but much more so to kill oneself because of how many people you can harm, instead of just yourself being in pain

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Depends on how much pain your in and how many people would miss you. A lot people don't have a lot of friends and no family. You will get over someones death. It takes years of being suicidal to go through with the action (usually) and it generally doesn't go awayy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I would agree with that, there are varying degrees of pain. But like i said earlier its impossible to see beforehand all possible outcomes before doing something that permanent. It could affect things in many more ways than you would first think

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Still, it's hard to be that rational when you're depressed.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ignoring all the above comments about these apparently common "life threatening diseases that are extremely painful and slow killing face fucker uppers that also put you into depression," maybe the miserable person just needs to get the fuck over it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You can't "get the fuck over" something that's killing you when you have no control over curing it and/or no way of curing it...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

As I said, I wasn't talking about a disease.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe you need to experience something for yourself before you go around making assumptions about it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There is always a better answer than suicide. I know someone who has attempted suicide and the reason that I did not want them to do it was for their sake, not mine. I knew that if they got past that rough spot and got help, their life eventually would be a million times better. If she had died, she never would have had a ton of awesome experiences in life.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's so hard to see when you're depressed though. People kill themselves because they honestly and truly believe their lives will always suck.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The post isn't suicide never being the answer. It's not even about how when people tell someone not to kill themselves it would be because they would miss them. It's about how if you don't want them to kill themself because you'd miss them, you're as selfish as they are.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What is there's no one who will miss you because everyone hates you? And everyone will hate you wherever you go, not because of what you do to them, but just for being yourself. Then it isn't selfish because there's no one else to think about. If you're committing suicide because of that, you're not only escaping your problems, you're taking out the very source of them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i don't think suicide is selfish...it's a terrible choice, of course, but i don't think it's selfish.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think that everyone should have the rights to their own life. I also think that nobody can possibly imagine what it's like to be suicidal/ depressed unless they have been. From the outside looking in, it seems completely ridiculous. Wanting to die completely goes against nature, which is why it's so hard to understand. But most people who are depressed don't feel like life is going badly and they're experiencing some hard times. They feel as if life will ALWAYS be bad. When you lose hope, nothing seems to matter anymore. That being said, it is also completely normal (and completely justified) to be angry at someone for ending their life. Say your friend was murdered... you wouldn't just be mad at the murderer for killing your friend... you'd be mad at them for robbing your friend's parents of their daughter, her siblings of their sister, etc. And that's exactly what your friend did. Anway, I kind of started rambling, but my point is that yes, suicide is selfish, but it's about a lot more than just selfishness.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I feel that suicide is a form of stealing. There are just so many people out there who could use your help that you owe it to them to stick a round. Maybe your happiness isn't as important as the happiness of others.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's true! Everyone will eventually experience death, but we only have a limited time here to be with all the other people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This post has a really good point, but I still think that suicide is a bad choice. Maybe if people sticked around longer they could eventually be happy...I don't really know because I'm not depressed or anything, but I think that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Of course it is, but I think people should have the choice. And I agree.
