+516 Don't get me wrong, I feel really sorry for people who cut themselves, but its really annoying when they think their lives must be tougher than yours because they do that. My life could be just as difficult as yours, I just choose not to cut myself, amirite?

I stop feeling bad for them when they devote tumblr blogs entirely to pictures of their scarred wrists, bad poetry, and complaints about their "shitty" lives.

If someone is posting pictures of their mutilated body online for attention, do you honestly think they're mentally stable? Yes, they're attention-seeking, but that doesn't mean their instability is any less valid. That being said, I've seen the type of blogs you're talking about and they disturb me immensely.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Most people who are attention-seeking aren't mentally stable, in general.

I tried it once. It sucked.

And then you turn around and force Peter to cut his entire freaking hand off. Nice.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not all think that but, no offense, most do.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, the people who do it because they need to and not stupid teens looking for attention DO have tougher lives. Those same tougher lives and pain are what is making them need a distraction, which is most commonly cutting.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I can't think of a circumstance where anybody NEEDS to cut. It just adds to the problems you're experiencing in life, ya know?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, it doesn't. It helps. You obviously have no experience nor understanding in this. It's a commonly known fact that a lesser physical pain takes away from the enormous emotional pain.

Actually, my sister is a recovering cutter. I may not know what it's like to have cuts, but I know how much it hurts to see the scars. I know that on this subject I can't change your mind, so I'm not going to try. It is just my opinion that although the physical pain may distract you for a little while, in the long run, it's only hurting you more.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Explain that last point, if you don´t mind.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You cut tonight, and you feel better, but only until tomorrow. But it leaves scars, you're hurting yourself, you're hurting your friends, your family. Going out and doing something, for yourself or the community or bigger, its going to help you in the long run. Don't think I'm telling you that people who cut are weak, or wrong, I'm just saying that even though you may think it helps now, it really doesn't. I'm not very good at explaining things, I tend to ramble and repeat myself, without ever really getting to the point. Sorry about that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You´re right that you´re not good at explaining your points. You say cutting may help now, but it hurts you more in the long run. Then you say you feel better now but it leaves scars? That's the awful thing that comes in the long run? Scars don't hurt you. Hurting others doesn't count as hurting yourself, either. And doing something for the community is completely irrelevant and the last thing you would want to do in that condition.

Okay

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So you admit you have no experience in this and are just arguing what you think would happen? All those who are downing my comments and agreeing with you are in the same shoes. You lot have no idea, yet you think you do.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I guess so.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Aw, you don't even want to continue arguing? (cry2)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, I really don't like arguing with people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

People who have tough lives go out and do something, try to change their lives. People who cut are just drowning in self-negativity and need to learn that life isn't all happiness and how to make the best of what you have.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Cutting isn't something people do just like "Oh hey I want attention and I want people to think my life is worse than theirs". It's not a conscious decision like that. From my experience, people cut because they feel like its the only way to release their pain, from whatever they're going through. It doesn't matter how bad their life is compared to someone elses; every single person has something they're dealing with and it can push some people over the edge. Also, most people who cut try to hide it, not show it off so it's not just about attention. It's good that you choose not to cut yourself, but you're not thinking about the people who started it to try to help their problems, and now are trying really hard to stop but can't.

I used to cut and know several people who do/have and its not about thinking our lives are tougher. For me personally, I always felt guilty about even going to those extremes over the little things when other people had it so much worse. Obviously there are some people that do it for attention or because they really think they have the worst lot in life, but don't judge us all by a few lowlifes.

I completely agree with a lot of things said here, and being an ex-cutter myself I know firsthand how hard it can be. But I feel like I should point out that OP said "It's really annoying WHEN they think their lives must be tougher than yours." Not suggesting that EVERY cutter thinks their life is the toughest.

For some people, it starts as a way out, then grows into an addiction. When I first quit for good (I'd tried a few times before and failed miserably) I'd still end up flat on the ground, trying to cut myself with my nails, just because I wanted the pain. Sometimes there wasn't even a big conflict in my life, I just needed to feel something. I still have issues with it-- not quite every day, but often enough-- and I've been clean for years. Just thought I'd throw this in here.

People who cut themselves do not think, "My life is so hard so I'm going to cut myself." They are incapable of handling their emotional pain, so they turn it into a physical pain, which they can control. It acts as a stress relief. Obviously, when people cut they're not in a rational state of mind, because cutting is typically associated with depression and high anxiety, two disorders which are infamous for causing intensely irrational thoughts. These aren't people who are selfish and think they're better than you. These are people who are mentally ill. Please be a little more empathetic. Compassion and support does a lot more healing than criticism and ignorance.

I have a friend who has chronic stomach problems, and uses cutting as a way to relieve pain from her stomach, since her disease is undiagnosable and untreatable. Although I agree that cutting shouldn't be a way to "brag" that your life is tougher, sometimes it's necessary just to make it through the day.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Some people just can't deal with stress the same way other people do, they don't always think their lives are crappier than other people's.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I tried cutting once. It was a last resort. I was at rock bottom. I'm really bad at explaining my emotions and feelings to other people, so I almost cut for the.chance that someone might see the scars and realize I wasn't happy. It wasn't for attention, it was a cry for help. I ended up not cutting. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
