+168 Although texting and driving can be dangerous, it's just as dangerous as any other task you can do while driving (eating, drinking, riding with distracting friends, etc.), amirite?

I know the big issue with texting is that you have to take your eyes off the road to text (the same thing you do when fiddling with the radio). But with my old phone, texting only required two quick glances: 1. Read short message. *feel keys with thumb for typing out reply* 2. Glance at short reply to make sure it makes sense. *press send* I think commercials are discriminating texting and driving a little too much.

Yeah, you may have your eyes on the road, but I'd say a good part of your attention is focused on the text even if your eyes aren't. I bet if they did a test where one person is only driving and the other person is texting but has his eyes on the road, the person texting would have a significantly slower reaction time. It's like only half your brain is driving at that point.

The media plays up the dangers of texting and driving because it's a new form of distraction that has come about with the age of technology. All the other ones you mentioned have been around forever and have been ingrained in driving safety.

other tasks are also distracting but they can't ban you from the radio so they are minimizing the distractions by banning cell phone use. not all the distractions are gone there are just less of them, which is better.

Even talking on your phone can be dangerous. It's very easy to get caught up in a conversation. A lot of people tend to turn towards the person who is talking and give them a quick glance, a glance away is all it takes to get in an accident. Kids can also be VERY distracting.

My friend is in the hospital because some idiot was texting while driving and hit her car and she was impaled by part of the other car. Texting while driving is the stupidest thing you can possibly do...

Statistically, you'd be safer driving drunk than driving while texting.
