+275 Giving the unemployed money will not encourage them to get jobs, it encourages them to stay unemployed and get money\, amirite?

If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime... or at least until all the fish die out.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No it doesn't. Where i live, you have to apply for seven jobs a month or you'll no longer receive it. Also, you only get a fraction of what you were previously making. It's not encouraging at all.

I think he's mainly talking about the brokenness of the welfare system :p

I've been seeing a lot of these posts this week. No OP, giving a dying wo/man food isn't going to encourage her/him to go out and magically get a lifelong dream career that s/he has been searching for. But I'll tell you what it DOES do, it'll stop that person from fucking DYING. Have you considered that odd situation where someone doesn't dye from starvation in a fucking "developed" country... it's incredible how many people don't realize how shitty some parts of America are... it's LITERALLY (I'm not exaggerating here) like a third world country IN AMERICA. Yes people, these places do exist inside of America, so you bitching about losing a penny when you make a million dollars a day to help someone who hasn't eaten in days seems a tiny bit stupid. And this isn't even just one person in a million deal, there is too large of an extremely poor population in America. Everyone values money and no one values lives... money is supposed to support you so you can LIVE, you're not supposed to be living to support money. The purpose of your life isn't to collect all the money in the world. I'm not a genius, but asked the purpose of life, I can tell you one thing for sure, it's NOT money.

I agree, you're right. But OP is right too. But there's a difference between a dying wo/man or a starving child or a sick elder wo/man who can't work and who deserve the help and the money and who you should help, and between a healthy wo/man who should be searching for a job, but instead they're just beggars on the street, waiting for others to give them their money that they actually worked really hard for. Even if they're uneducated, they could work as anything; maids, bus/taxi drivers, chauffeurs, cleaners in some place, hair salon, join the army, sales person in some shop, waiters, etc.. I prefer to donate to some charity, which I already do

Which is the point of the post as best interpreted without being a screaming lunatic.

Let's think about this, if educated college graduates are getting fired from their job and new graduates aren't managing to find any... what makes you think uneducated people will find a job. They have to compete with the educated people because a lot of them are taking the jobs in stores as cashiers or becoming taxi drivers. Do you think they enjoy that? Starving for days and waiting for others to feed them? It's a vicious cycle, if they're poor then they probably won't be able to afford to dress and look appropriately for an interview, if they can't do that then they probably won't get a job. Even if they did manage to get there, do you think they'll choose someone who has no idea what they're doing with their lives over someone who has finished college? Also think about this, you're a college graduate and you probably have a good amount of students loans to pay off and you're at a min wage job in a crap part of town, how long do you think you'll stay there? You'll soon be evicted or maybe your car might be repo'd, then how will you get from and to work? You'll probably lose that job, because you'll be late often (bus). Then YOU will be the bum on the street, a college graduate

LOL unless you're an orphan with no family or relatives or friends, then I'm sure you'll find a place to stay; maybe with your parents or siblings or uncle or cousins or friends. Really why are you making it seem like there's no solution. Besides dont parents usually pay for college? And a lot of students just live with their parents. Most beggars just do that on purpose to get money, and don't actually search for jobs; sometimes they even have money. See those children beggars on the street? Their crappy parents send them their on purpose to make money while sitting on their lazy ass without working

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, but how long can family relatives friends support you? Parents don't usually pay for college... do you have any idea how much college costs? I'm going to a relatively okay college in state and my loans are $24,000 a year... I make $7.50 an hour and work as much as I can and I have to pay for gas, insurance, books, summer courses, because loans don't cover those, food, and other stuff. I never have any money... and there are other students like me, except they can't even get a job. So imagine how much more their loans are. Yes we can live with our parents, but once we finish college we're not going to stay there much are we? Do you have any idea the psychological affect on the people who have a degree and still can't get a job? These things send them into depressions and once depression hits, it's hard to keep doing anything.... There are lazy beggars, but there are also hard working ones, you're saying if we help the hard working ones then we will also be helping the ones that are lazy, so lets let them all die? You know Ron Paul plans on ending student loans so that they can't go to school? So if you're poor you'll be stuck that way for the rest of your life....

On the post

Hmm.. that's not really relevant, because this was homepaged this week. I'm saying that these type of posts have been on the homepage a lot lately.

How does this have this many Yeah You Ares!? Seriously? My mother has been unemployed for 2 years now and since 2002 has been on about 15 jobs with an average duration of 3 months. She's now 49 which doesn't help at all. Trust me, she sure as hell wants a job. Every week she fills in applications from heaps of different types of jobs and never gets a positive response. If she had never gotten any unemployment money she'd be dead and so would I. No one in the family wants to support her because they're tired of giving her money and to top that off, no one in Spain likes lesbians like herself. Don't tell me all she wants to do is slack off and sit on the couch all day—you have no idea. You are probably upper middle class or upper class who's lived spoiled and well all their life; you'll never be in a situation like her or the other unemployed population of this planet, so you have no clue what you are talking about.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's a much less common case. Cultural taboo has led to a situation that it's much harder to exist in.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe giving them time to hear there story is always a good thing. If you feel obligated to help don't just give money. ( even though that helps) give them your time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I understand that there are many personal cases in which work is hard to come by. Times are tough, and money is very welcome. Everyone should be supporting those people. However: 1. There are better ways to use the same money to prevent unemployment and 2. Many people are just taking up the money because they are simply too lazy to get a job.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

As long as they're trying to find a job, I don't see the problem with giving unemployed people money.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But some don't try.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But most do try and methinks that protecting the well-being of those who try is more important than punishing those who don't.
