It seems like people in my high school know everyone. I'm a part of my college's admitted students fb group, and I asked the question, "Who else is from NYC?" I had at least one mutual friend with everyone who responded, and even 5 or 6 with other people who I had never met. NYC is not exactly a small town. in that same group, I had mutual friends with people from Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. it was really interesting.
