I still like to read Dr. Seuss and I'm 16; so make of that what you will.

Shakespeare is renowned as one of the greatest English writers of all time. Why would I rather read children's books?

Yes, Seuss is superior, and I'll tell you why, while speaking in rhyme, for a challenge I'll try. Seuss is for everyone, he's read by all, while to understand Shakespeare an English major you must call. With The Lorax he taught us to respect the Earth, and Shakespeare is so confusing we all give him a wide berth. Also, Seuss is so catchy, and upbeat, and he rhymes, and there's no way around it, Shakespeare is behind the times. In this last line I feel I must apologize for my verse, but if I'd FAVORED Shakespeare, I assure you, this would have been much worse.

the downfall of intelligence in our society. very nice, op.

Shakespeare is incredibly overrated. Okay, fine, he was a good writer. But even when his works are translated into modern speak, they're not interesting. And his attempts at humor may have been funny a few hundred years ago, but comedy has changed since then and now he isn't funny. He's been the face of plays and writers for hundreds of years, it's time to let him go. The fact that I prefer Doctor Seuss to Shakespeare doesn't mean I'm any less intelligent than you.

First of all, I'd just like to say that I love Dr. Seuss and Shakespeare.
Honestly, I completely disagree with your opinion of Shakespeare. "His attempts at humor may have been funny a few hundred years ago." Did you know that in Midsummer Night's Dream, a character by the name of "Bottom" is transformed into a donkey (an ass)? That's timeless humor, if you ask me. Have you read or seen Much Ado About Nothing? If so, you can't deny that Dogberry is one of the funniest characters of all time.
Also, have you actually seen Shakespeare's plays (or, even better, performed in them), or have you just read them? The jokes are much funnier, when you see them being performed, rather than just reading them in a book, and seeing the play performed also makes it easier to understand the language. I'd say Shakespeare is great when read or seen/performed, but if you don't like his plays (yet ), I suggest you withhold judgement until you've seen/performed them.

Dr. Suess is basically silly-sounding gibberish, Shakespeare is meaningful and exciting.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Shakespeare is exciting...if you've been dead for 400 years.
by Anonymous12 years ago
It might be hard to understand but the plots are actually interesting.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I disagree. I've read his works translated into modern speak, totally understandable, and I still didn't find it interesting.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Ok. You're allowed to have a different opinion.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm glad you think so :) If Shakespeare is your thing, by all means read away!

Poetic talent is easy to fake when thy sentences doth no fucking sense make.

"Do what you want and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -Dr Seuss
Seuss wrote about important moral lessons in simple, enjoyable books accessible to all. Shakespeare wrote longwinded plays full of sexual innuendos of the period.
Why is this even up for disussion?

Wow, I've never heard that quote by Seuss before. I like that.
