+61 It's annoying when girls say they love chocolate, but they only like milk/white chocolate. If you don't like dark chocolate, then you don't actually like chocolate; what you actually like is chocolate-flavored candy that's 70% sugar and milk by weight, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You could maybe argue that for white chocolate, but milk chocolate is legit, even if it is more sugar than cocoa. It's like my aunt likes tea, but only really really weak tea. Even though in a lot of country, chocolate with a high cocoa content is the only true chocolate, that type of elitism doesn't work in the West where generic milk chocolate is the typical.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you only like something because it's filled with sugar, then you like sugar, not the thing that it's sweetening. Your aunt wasn't a great comparison: she isn't diluting the tea with over flavors, just weakening the flavors in the tea. Chocolate has over 300 flavor compounds, and adding sugar literally masks your ability to even perceive most of them. I'm being a bit elitist, but that doesn't mean my logic doesn't work.

I still disagree, because in the West, "chocolate" is the candy that has more milk and sugar than cocoa. Also disagree about the sugar - it heightens the flavour, and yeah, does make it more generic and easy on the tastebuds, but, when used properly, sugar in milk chocolate complements and enhances the cocoa flavour, rather than disguises it.

I see what you're saying, but if anything that just adds to my annoyance - the fact that people think that popular milk chocolate candy is anything like the truly remarkably flavorful food that chocolate can be. And sorry but there's no case for milk chocolate. The amount of sugar added (typically 50% or more by weight) overloads the taste buds and prevents the subtler flavor compounds from chocolate from binding to those same receptors. By the time you add the milk component to milk chocolate, you've masked most of the flavors of the cocoa.

Hmmm, I guess you're right, I concede. I guess I was more annoyed at the idea of chocolate elitism than having a real argument for popular milk chocolate.

Why only girls?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because I've heard dozens of girls say they love chocolate, but only a small handful of guys say the same thing. I hope that's not the reason you voted NW; I wasn't intending to be sexist.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I voted NW because I disagree with the post.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay. Well I'm glad I could clear that up for anyone else who might've been wondering.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

God made dark chocolate. Therefore, it's the only logical chocolate!!! nah im jk. I just LOOOOOVE me some dark chocolate yum

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Same, it's the only chocolate I really like. That and those big rum and raisin chocolate blocks -drools-

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I disagree with this post because I think that you're arrogant due to the fact that you get annoyed because someone likes something different than you. What's next, hate for people who like their eggs scrambled instead of sunny side up? Grow up, the world would be a boring place if we all like the exact same things.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not annoyed that they like something different. I'm annoyed because they think they like something truly special when in fact they don't have a taste for it. Imagine if someone said they like Eminem, but the only song they know by him is "Love the Way You Lie". I'm annoyed by ignorant people, not people who are different from me. Do yourself a favor and look up "straw man fallacies".

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Liking milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate isn't ignorance. It's all chocolate, just in different forms. And why do other people's likes affect you so much?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It is ignorance if the person thinks that the taste of milk chocolate represents the flavors that dark chocolate can bring to the palette. Other people's "likes" don't affect me that much, but I do find it annoying. You are the one who is getting butthurt (even telling me to "grow up") simply because I posted something that challenged your beliefs.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, you didn't challenge my beliefs I told you to grow up because it's very immature to be annoyed with someone based on their likes or what you seem to call ignorance. I don't feel as strongly about chocolate as you seem to. Plus I still wouldn't say these people are ignorant because most people have tried dark chocolate and some prefer milk chocolate.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's not due to the fact they like something different, it's due to the fact they say they like it but they don't REALLY like it. Like when people say they like coffee, but what they like is milk sugar cream cinnamon vanilla and a little bit of coffee.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

White chocolate is not chocolate. it is a milk bar because it contains no cocoa. Milk chocolate is cocoa flavoured milk, and dark chocolate is milk flavoured cocoa. chocolate=/=cocoa, but it must contain cocoa. I still agree with the post, though

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Chocolate: "a preparation of cocoa, often sweet and flavored." OR "a candy prepared from the above mixture." I think you are mistaken. They do like chocolate.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I like both. Get over it, it's all chocolate.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I love dark chocolate. yum

by Anonymous 12 years ago

on the mobile version, all the words "chocolate" are stacked on top of each other. just derpin around lol.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I actually don't like milk chocolate. I think its too sweet and tastes weird. I prefer dark

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How dare you suggest I don't like chocolate?!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Chocolate purists piss me off.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You really hate someone for not liking your definition of chocolate? Really, chocolate? Someone needs a life...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

When did I ever say I hated anyone?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't really like dark chocolate, but I still say I like chocolate. It's just like how my favorite color is a shade of blue so I say I like blue, even through I don't care for some of the other shades of it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So are you saying I don't like coffee?!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you don't like to drink it black, then yes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I guess I don't like cereal if I prefer to add milk to it then.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Milk doesn't mask any of the flavors of the cereal. It does, however, mask many of the flavor compounds in coffee.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I like to think it complements them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Nope, it blocks your taste buds from being able to perceive many of them at all.
