+187 When someone says no to a date with you, they're saying they won't even eat a free meal around you, amirite?

1. Usually when I go on a date and we get something to eat, I pay for mine, they pay for theirs. 2. A date isn't just about the food/activity/whatever you're doing - it does have a certain symbolism - that you're interested in this person, and you're going out to possibly see if you can be together long term and/or have sex.

First of all, dinner should never be a first date idea. It's not a good investment because it can be costly and your date may end up not being into you. Dinner is for later on. Always do coffee. It's cheap, there's no expectation that the guy has to pay (unless your date is a bitch), it allows conversation so you two can get to know each other better, and if you feel the conversation is dying, it's easy to just make up an excuse and depart.

Or you don't want to accept a free dinner from someone in a way that might be leading him/her on.

Or it's a quote from Jim Gaffigan.
