+233 It's silly that employers look you up on Facebook before they hire you and make assumptions about your work ethic from things you post, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think it's appropriate but I think the reasoning behind it is quite sensible.

My friend doesn't have a facebook and when she applied for a job they told her they needed to see her facebook and when she said she didn't have one they wouldn't hire her because they thought she was lying.

That's fucking stupid!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well when u post " got so stoned last night, taking off work today, who gives a shit ". ... That's propably gonna give a bad impression.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Exactly. If briefly scanning someone's profile (most people leave it on public for whatever reason) and they find things like that, they won't want to hire. It would save some companies quite a bit of time if they could see work ethic this easily. Also, if you don't wanna look like an ass online, then don't put shit online that you wouldn't want the whole world to see. That's how I think of it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Or just don't do the stupid shit in the first place.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Also very true. If you don't do stupid shit, nobody can post a picture of you doing stupid shit.

Unless they're a master of Photoshop.

Sue a bitch for slander!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sounds good to me.

Just so everybody knows, posts count as status updates, pictures, and other information.

I think it's silly. They take things too seriously when deciding who to hire. Unless your job is media or public relations, where IMAGE is a huge thing it shouldn't matter. Having a pic of you partying on facebook is not going to cost you any clients or the company any business. I can't imagine being a cashier and having a customer come in and be like "I saw you on facebook yesterday and I can't believe you posted a pic of you at a concert! HOW DARE YOU! I'm going to talk with your boss!" But companies hire/not hire people like that's a real life scenario that's actually going to happen >_<

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A concert... no. But drinking/smoking/other ILLEGAL things, yes. If I was a boss, I wouldn't want a 16 year old party kid/juvenal delinquent working in my clothing store, ice cream shop, where ever. I just wouldn't.

For me, they do way more than look into my Facebook account. I'm applying to be a police officer and they will go and interview family and friends as well as check out my Facebook. I think it makes sense, at least for this job. Also, I think it makes sense for a teacher (as if a teacher has inappropriate stuff online, that's not ok, because kids could easily find it and because of what the position implies and who you are as a public figure, if that makes sense).

I think it's stupid when they don't hire a teenager that has pictures of them at a party or concert. But sometimes status updates do tell a lot about how seriously a person takes school and work. For example, there's a post in my news feed right now that says "Gonna be slow at the bridal shop I already feel it. Gonna skip it today. I want less hours anyway" Granted, this is on the extreme side of the spectrum but it would show any potential employer that this guy doesn't take work seriously and has no idea how to properly request a change in his work frequency.

It's illegal where I live, because of privacy and anti-discrimination. The laws were changed to include social media, so if you find out that they looked at your profile and that's why they didn't hire you, they can get into trouble.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

where do you live? Time to make plans to move there.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Australia, but now I can't find anything about the laws :S
