+411 Abusers of animals should be punished just as harshly as abusers of humans, since animals can't even stand up for themselves, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I like eating hamburgers but I would never eat a human. Dont get me wrong, I think abusing animals is wrong, but its definitely not the same.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree, it's like charging a hunter for murder.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree with this in a sense, but at the same time i don't. For instance, a dog can't verbally stand up for themselves, but they sure as hell can bite and scratch you/seriously injure you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A human could go get a gun and blast the abusers head off, they just choose not to because they're scared.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

By the logic that not being able to stand up for yourself makes your case viable, people who abuse trees should get it as bad as anyone. I agree that animal abuse is wrong, but the punishment should fit the crime.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, most trees stand up for themselves pretty well. Ever seen a full-grown oak? Or a redwood? Those trees stand up!!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So then how do you differentiate between animal abusers? I'm pretty sure we've all killed a spider or a fly, so should we all go to jail?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Cold-blooded creatures like spiders and flies don't feel anything, it's not the same.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Plus, animals that attack humans are almost always killed. A human that attacks another human might get a year in jail. A slap on the wrist.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Really? Because if I try to abuse a dog I'm sure as hell getting my face clawed off.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Exactly, most big dogs could stand up for themselves in a fight. If you tried to hit a pit bull you could lose an arm.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But who instigates the problem in the first place? A human probably threatened it or a human taught it to attack.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's not always true. Dogs attack humans a lot more than you'd think.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Without any human fault? Like it being abused earlier in life, or a human making it feel threatened? That happens often?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Pit bulls are actually really sweet dogs, people just assume that they'll maul you because they are forced to fight

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No. Animals shouldn't be valued at the level of humans.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If they can feel pain just as well, what makes it any better to abuse them then a person?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Are you saying you believe an animal's life is just as valuable as a human's life?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This is weird fEMMAnist because normally we disagree with each other. Like, about everything. This is a rare happenstance.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, I do. I don't expect many others to, just my opinion.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not saying that it's "better." I'm saying that humans should be valued more that animals. Of course abuse of any sort is a horrible thing and I wish it didn't have to happen, but we need to be reasonable. It doesn't make sense to put someone in jail for a few years because they kick a dog. And it is impossible to draw the line on animal abuse and just being human. I eat cow almost every day, but I'm not an animal abuser. I also kill flies and spiders and when animals like dogs beg me for food, I don't give it to them. That's not abuse, but it would be if those were humans. Also, what about people who raise mice or rats and do experiments with them or do other things to them that aren't good for them? Are you going to put someone in jail for that? Or for setting a mousetrap? Just some food for thought...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

For a majority of experimenting on animals, yes they should be in jail. I realize that it has led to cures for lots of things, but a majority of it is unnecessary torture. Eating cow is possibly contributing to torture, and is contributing to murder.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So I should go to prison because I eat steak?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You're right, animals are better than humans. Your comment proves it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Whatever they did to the animal should be done to them, much more effective then a short time in jail or community service.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I just had a piece of chicken for dinner, does that mean I should be killed, roasted, and eaten with a side of rice? O.o

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Who ever raised and then killed it should, yes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That would force everyone to be vegetarians because all of the animal farmers would be killed for animal abuse, and meat would no longer be in stores. We would have to raise and kill our own animals to eat, but then we'd be killed for abuse, too.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That would be a good thing, almost no one actually needs meat to live, and there are plenty of alternatives, so there is no reason to kill animals for it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But following your logic of treating humans and animals the same, shouldn't we then force all animals to become vegetarian? I mean, if it's unethical for humans to eat meat, why would it be okay for other animals to eat meat? And don't try to use the argument that other animals need the meat to live because if they make the choice to kill another animal for its meat so they can live, aren't they then valuing their life over another animal's? Which is really what we're trying to eradicate here. But then if every person and animal was a vegetarian the world would become overpopulated and it's likely our entire ecosystem would fail and thus an extreme amount of species would perish while others might hang on for life. Is this what you want? A mass extinction caused by widespread vegetarianism?! IS IT?! Didn't think so. So shut the fuck up and take your hippie ideals back to la-la-land while I actually think through a proposal before I open my mouth. Thanks. Have a nice day.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Seriously? Of course I am not saying we should somehow force all animals to not eat meat, we are capable of making a moral choice not to eat it, as well as not needing it. They don't have either option. If every living thing didn't eat meat then of course there would be an over population problem, but with just humans, that is not a problem, so no, a mass extinction is not what I want or what would happen.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So you're saying it's okay for animals to consider themselves above other animals but it's not okay for humans to consider themselves above animals?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That is exactly what I am saying, we are capable of making that choice and they are not.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If animals don't have capability to make moral choices, then they aren't at the level of humans!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, this isn't what I meant. When someone uses animal products in a way that doesn't promote cruelty then I think it's alright. It's just knowingly abusing some other living thing that bothers me. I eat meat, it's just that I eat free range, organic meats that I can be assured that they don't live like this: http://dellabee.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/chicken-truck.jpg. I've seen these trucks, and it made me nauseous to drive behind them. It's awful. I have a problem with unnecessary cruelty.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I understand that, the comments just ended up in my idea of a perfect system for animal abuse. As to the real word, I wish more people were like you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Thank god I live in America where there's this amendment to the constitution protecting me from idiots that think all omnivores need to be killed the way the animal was. Also, after reading more of your posts, I have came to the conclusion that you take animal cruelty way too far.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And why shouldn't I? I don't honestly think that any of this would actually happen, just giving my opinion that it should.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because they're just animals. I mean, don't get me wrong I like animals and cringe when people talk about turning them into coats, but come on you honestly believe people that eat meat need to die? A little extreme don't you think?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, I don't. I think that people who either torture them while raising them (not saying that this happens everywhere before you all flip out for that) or who kill them. If it dies naturally then eating it would be a good thing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But eating meat is natural for humans to do.... Killing to survive is also natural. The torturing is a problem, okay, but unless you go and monitor every single farm you're not helping the problem.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I poked a grizzly bear once. It was helpless against me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why do we protect domesticated animals and then kill and eat the rest? Isn't an animal an animal?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you boil a crab alive you're a chef, boil a kitten alive you're in jail, makes no sense to me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Kittens aren't as delicious.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How do you know?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

wary

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know! People oppose the killing of dogs and cats but nobody cares about killing tapeworms! Seriously, tapeworms are in the animal kingdom too but I've never seen protests to stop the murder of innocent little tapeworms. They have feelings too!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"Resolved: Justice requires the recognition of animal rights." Somebody has to debate LD here. I'm going crazy. For everyone else, that resolution is the topic right now and it's crazy-relevant to this post.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So if somebody commits a heinous crime that results in the death of an animal, you think they should be put to death wherever capital punishment is legal? That seems a little drastic to me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't believe in the death penalty. I just don't think we have the right to pick and choose who lives.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ooooh, I just now got your post. A lot of the stuff Miss_Anthrope was saying really threw me off and was very drastic and extreme. You think that those who abuse animals should get the same jail time as those who abuse humans, right? And since you don't believe int he death penalty, someone who kills an animal should go to jail for life, //not// be killed? The question that arises is, is a human life equal in value to an animal life? Our jails are crowded enough. Do we really need animal abusers in their for life, too?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Everyone: I'm not saying that there aren't holes to poke in this, just that some who, say, participate in dog fighting shouldn't only be worth less than 2 years in jail (Michael Vick, I'm pointing a finger at you). Drowning puppies? Not a good thing. Boiling kittens? Rather wrong. Juggling hamsters? Sounds funny, but in all reality would be cruel. I consider animal abuse to mean intentional abuse without use. (Someone's example: killing a deer within all regulations and then using it's whole body is fulfilling the circle of life, but sport killing is cruel.) There is no one way to choose which animals are correct to kill, and which aren't, but I generally go with domesticated are ones that I personally wouldn't choose to kill, as the one considered more "sentient" than other, such as monkeys and apes, etc. There is no correct way to choose what is right and not right to kill.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you want a reason to believe that abandonment charges for animals should be higher, look at "Dead Dog Beach" in Puerto Rico. It's very depressing stuff.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

there is a difference between meat packaging and kicking puppies....

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't see the difference if the animals have been kept in tiny cages for there whole lives and have had chemicals put into them, but I never said that there wasn't a difference between well raised and then slaughter animals for food products and puppy kickers. Where did you even get the idea that I meant something like that, I expressly said abusers, not users.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i was never referring to you, Driney.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh okay, right. I totally see that now, sorry. This is what comes of reading this stuff when I'm half-asleep.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

oh no its fine:] i liek mudkipz

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I hate people who abuse animals especially dog fighters. They piss me off so much because in the end it's the dogs who pay the highest price - their life while the owners either get away or get put in prison for a year or less. It's sick. As for killing animals for food, it depends for me. There are places where the animals are raised and properly cared for until they are slaughtered, but that's not normally the case. I'm against torturing animals, which happens in most slaughterhouses but I'm not going to stop eating chicken or meat in general because of it. Killing for food I can understand even though I don't like it, but killing for sport pisses me off. Unless we want animals to rule the world one day we should not hold them up to the same value as humans. They are a lower priority but that doesn't mean we should stop fighting animal abuse.
