The Dr. Pepper campaign saying Dr. Pepper 10 is "Not for women" is ridiculously sexist, amirite?
by Anonymous12 years ago
They're not trying to be sexist. I think it's actually a good thing since they're trying to have diet drinks appeal to more men. I read an article on it and it said men tend to shy away from diet drinks, so that's why they made the campaign more "man friendly." Also, they did focus groups and most of the women weren't even offended by it.

Well my view of it is that sexism is defined as "discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex". Any person at an advertising agency would think a slogan that says "not for women" is NOT a good idea. It's a very odd decision, because this will sound sexist itself, most women like to think that everyone hates women. And they will boycott everything that comes their way. It would be hard to not think that it would be a bad idea.

Did you read that on Cracked?

Or maybe they...*gasp* formed their own opinion?

Anon said they read it in an article. I just read an article on Cracked.com about the same thing. Thanks for the sarcasm though!

If they wanted to market a diet drink to men there are thousands of other ways they could have done it.

Exactly how I thought about it.

Coke Zero did it quite well I think

Yorkie chocolate has been doing it for years anyway.

I don't get how people can no way this. Even if you like the ad or weren't offended by it, it's blatantly sexist. That's kind of the point.

Same thing with KFC Boxmaster ads and Bar-One ads.

The idea is that women will see and and go, "Oh, not for women? I'll show them!" and buy it anyway.

Clever them:)

Don't buy it. If all the women followed the advice of this marketing campaign they'd cut their sales in half. Problem solved.

In the end, the fact that we are still talking about it shows that the commercial did its job. You know, the whole "not for women" thing is just a hyperbole. Im pretty sure they werent thinking that they actually wanted to reduce the product's demographic by half... The idea was that the phrase would actually increase its appeal to women. Anyway, TONS of advertising research goes into these before they air, so they probably knew what they're doing..

Not everything is about you.
You're probably not the target audience for the commercial - so it doesn't matter what you think.
Besides, there are a lot of marketing materials out there that cater to women only for products that can be used by either sex - where 's your outrage for that? Hypocrite.

Your opinion... just doesn't matter

Actual YouTube comment on the video for the commercial:

While I agree that the commercial is ridiculously sexist, it seems to be doing its job. This girl thinks she's sticking it in Dr Pepper's face by drinking it. In the same time, the creators of the commercial are counting their heaps of money and laughing at the stupidity of women while these same women continue buying their products and telling all their friends about it (making the drink even more famous).
If you really hate the commercial and the product then stop talking about it. Boycott the soda. Refuse to buy it and watch as their sales cut in half.

A) it's a joke. Get over it. I highly doubt that the creators had a serious discussion and said "Hey. Women don't have as many rights as us. So let's separate the pops they drink"
B) why would any business ever try to reduce their potential buyers? "and if you call now, you can get this whole deal for only 19.99! Unless your mexican."
Honestly the PC world we live in today...

Well what they're doing, it's working. It's causing up a stir making it more famous. I had never heard of the stuff before this.
