+311 When you're watching TV and it's a commercial break, a fun game to play (more effective with multiple people) is to try to guess the commerical's product as quickly as you can. It also makes you realize that so many ads have little to do with what they advertise, amirite?

Well, if all advertisements never thought outside of the box, all air freshner commercials would be exactly the same: This room is stinky. Oh wait, now it's not. At least with some randomness, the commercials are more memorable. The best commercials are the ones that tie in something that has nothing to do with the product to illustrate why the product is exceptional. Hmm. I like that one because it's a metaphor of the car's performance. But I mean...commercials that imply buying a certain candle will make you have an amazing, joyful life in every aspect...:|

Oh yes, beer commercials are famous for this. It's calling selling a lifestyle instead of the product. That usually happens when the product is almost the same across the board, with minor variations. You used the example of a candle, I originally used an air freshener, and beer is the guiltiest. When you can't effectively sell a product in order to stand out, you stand out by selling an idea of what the product could stand for. Beer is usually for BBQs, night out with boys, etc. but it COULD be for getting drunk with hot, half-naked girls on the beach. ;)

True. I think car commercials are culprits also, putting forth the thought that with the acquisition of said car comes the acquisition of an equally grand lifestyle. But my post wasn't meant to berate such techniques, I just think it's interesting to note, and it makes my game much more challenging. :o

I used to do that, but instead of product, we guessed the brand. It was always awkward when I was 10 and had to pretend I didn't know what the condom or tampon ads were about...
