...just like most stereotypes

Most of the stereotypes about any group are wrong. I can't even think of any that are right.

Canadians saying "eh," but not "aboot."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Chauncys say "aboot". They also say "hey gurrrrl".

I don't really know why Chauncy says "aboot." Do you actually say it in real life and unintentionally? As in, it's simply your pronunciation? Because intentionally mispronouncing a word doesn't really count. What about "hey boiiii"?

I conditioned myself to say "aboot" instead of "about". Sometimes if I am in the presence of strange company, I will say "about", but I usually type "aboot" and I say "aboot" when I am with familiar people. What aboot "hey boiiii"?

Ah so it's not natural accent. I don't know anyone who actually says "aboot" because of their accent. I don't even know where that idea came from. I've also noticed that in almost every TV show they use a Minnesota accent as a Canadian accent, and it's not even close to the same thing.

Yeah, I notice that, too.

My History teacher last year grew up in Canada and he said "aboot." Not often, but he said it.

That's so odd. I've been in almost every province and territory and never heard it before. It's not normal for the whole country, but maybe for a certain area.

The post would be more correct if it said, "Most southerners don't follow the stereotype." Because I've talked to plenty of people from the south that follow the stereotype exactly.

i live in the south, and it's actually crazy how true some of the stereotypes are. you can't walk down the hallway without someone yelling "ROOLLL TIDE!"
